I've got some DVD+RW discs which I can't erase. ImgBurn gets to 98%, the drive spins up and down constantly and never completes. It doesn't appear to be isolated to some damaged discs, it's all DVD+RW media I use.

 

Some facts below:

 

- The drive is a: PHILIPS DVD+-RW SDVD8820 with AX02 firmware.

- The DVD+RW discs media code are: INFODISC-A10-01.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Is this 98% something that takes minutes to reach, or does it only take seconds?

 

I ask this because there are 2 stages to a DVD+RW erase / format.

 

The 1st part (foreground) will only take a few seconds and if it's stuck at 98% on that, it's different to when it's stuck at 98% on the 2nd part (background) which takes much longer.

Yes, I'm doing a full erase. It takes ~5 minutes or so to get to 98% - I wasn't timing though.

When it seems like it's stuck on 98%, press F8 and see if the drive is still responding to commands. You should see them scrolling up in the log window.

 

There's nothing I can really do if the drive just doesn't want to finish the task. Perhaps a lens cleaner might help? I assume the firmware is up-to-date and that the 'different' discs you tried were using different dyes?

Have you got any media besides those InfoDisk ones? I've never used their re-writables but their DVD-R media is rubbish. A log file would be handy if you still have it.

 

No, I don't have any other re-recordable media - I have been meaning to get some more though... any recommendations? B)

Like I said, I wasn't timing. It probably was around the 10 minutes mark. The firmware is up-to-date, but all the DVD+RW are of the same media code/dye. I'll try pressing F8 and see what happens.

Ok, the last bit of the debug log may have been more helpful ;)

 

But if it's at 98% and still accepting commands, it's just the drive not finishing what it's told to do.

 

I wish there was a "last bit", it just keeps going. Any idea why it wouldn't finish?

It's these 2 bytes that contain the % complete status.

 

100% being FF FF

 

As you can see, AB 89 is only just past half way ;)

 

As to why it's not finishing, I dunno, you'll have to ask the drive :P

 

Try some discs with a different dye. Verbatim ones or something. Perhaps get some DVD-RW's too while you're at it so you have a few to play around with.

Ah I see. Well, thanks for the help. I'll try with some of the other DVD+RW with the same media code/dye and see what happens. I suppose it's possible that my drive doesn't like that type of dye if it happens with them all.

Oh and i think there's an AX03 firmware for that drive available somewhere - someone just caught me on email saying the drive doesn't burn anything - seems this is common and dell (who happen to use these drives) just swap them out for a decent NEC one.

Make sure you visit the site for your own laptop manufacturer!

 

There's a good chance the xx3x series is for a different one to the xx0x series - and we don't want to be responsible for you bricking your drive!

 

Thanks for the advice. I would've researched the firmware before flashing it anyway. :thumbup:

 

BTW, I tried erasing and writing to the same discs using another drive and they work perfectly. Guess my primary drive just doesn't like the dye. >_<
