New Blank Disc-Not enough Disc space

Hi.

I am trying to burn Ubuntu 7.04 using an old HP 7500 CD Burner.

I am using a blank Imation 700MB/80Min CD-R.

I am getting a message saying:

 

There doesn't appear to be enough disk space to burn this image.

Img size:357,323 Sectors (697MB)

Disc Size:295,264 Sectors (576MB)

 

Would you like to continue anyway?

 

Here is the info in the info field:

Last month I burned Xubuntu 6.10 iso just fine onto a disc. Maybe that file was <576?

It sure doesn't look like a 700MB CD, regardless of what it says on the box. Here's one of mine.

Your drive is misreporting the size of the disc. Just try and burn anyway.

I never tried burning a 700MB/80 minutes disk with that old a cd writter?

and HP has no support for it either?

I agree. A new DVD writer can be bought for next to nothing these days. It wouldn't be a bad idea.

I have been considering a lightscribe drive.

Can I use these discs that I have left over, on a lightscribe, even though I can't print the label on them?

I'm not sure a Lightscribe burner is such a good choice. The media is more expensive and is often poor quality. Why not get a "normal" burner? The money you save from not having to throw lightscribe media into the bin would pay for a printer capable of printing directly onto your disks. Something like a Canon ip4200 (link here) or similar.
