Grain
I picked up a Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player over the weekend, watching The Matrix on it right now. Stunning picture.
lfcrule1972
You went for HD-DVD mate ? I thought that was losing the format war for the next gen discs ? I read earlier this week that Blockbuster in the US had decided to stock Blu-Ray at all it's US stores but not HD-DVD ? They would only stock the latter in a small number of stores and online I hate bloody format wars (Beta v VHS anyone) it's such a waste of time and money. LOCOENG
yep I'm not ready to jump in either direction yet anyway...and the prices have to come way down. Edited June 21, 2007 by LOCOENG

blutach
I'll be waiting a while. For dual format players that are not gunna cost me an arm and a leg. But certainly looking forward to HD. Regards
Shamus_McFartfinger
I'll be waiting a while too. Speculation was rife not too long ago that $ony threatened to revoke the licences of the "stampers" (those contracted to press the actual blu-ray disks) if they took contracts for pornographic films. Whether it's true or not is anyones' guess but what is known is that a large portion of the adult film business went across to HD-DVD. A $500 million a year industry (just in the USA) would have alot of pull. Pull? LOL! *sigh* Bedtime.
kirk1701™
Sticking with what I got also for the time being.. Besides guys, WTF your going to see the same picture on DL DVD as your going to see with HD or Blue Ray format ok, so the quality is just a bit better, who gives a shit as long as you see the same picture
Grain
I went with HD-DVD for now LFC as they have decently priced players(it does a nice job up-converting DVD's too) compared to BluRay. Who knows who'll win the war, if anyone, but BR does seem to have the upper hand. Universal is a hard line HD-DVD only supporter, and I couldn't wait to watch the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas HD-DVD I bot some months ago plus Dawn of the Dead(2204) is coming out on HD-DVD only this summer Whatever happens, it won't be the first format I've bot into that's failed, <cough> Laserdisc <cough>. Thing is kirk, it's not the same picture, having watched The Matrix on HD, my DVD of it will never be watched again.
kirk1701™
Oh I'm sure it's a great improvement Grain don't get me wrong. But its still the same movie just on a better quality disc that you pay more for, plus have to have a new player to play it on. To me, call me old fashion I guess (GUILTY) of keeping my 32" Zenith for 10 years before upgrading to my 42" plasma The 32" lives on, still as good an new in my moms room Back on topis, unless the picture just creates a virtual reality, brings the room to life and puts you into the movie where you actually get shot in the chest by a stray bullet during a shootout I can't sign the PO for that purchase Thats not saying that when my current DVD player goes that I would buy another DVD player, NO I would put the extra cash with it to buy one of the two formats at that time I'm hoping to replace my Tivo unit with a new built-in DVD Player, the Tivo series 3 that hit the market last fall which records in HD I'm just waiting now for two things. 1. One of the manufacturers come out with HD/BLue ray player with built in Tivo series 3 2. Tivo enables the room to room transfers on the series 3 like they currently have on the series 2. Something concerning copyright laws they have the R2R feature disabled to till they work out the shit with whoever so they can enable it via a regular update. lfcrule1972
Sorry Grain, after reading my post again it sounded really narky and I didn't mean it that way I agree with you tho re the quality, I have a blu-ray player (in the PS3, obviously not going to be the best quality given Sony's history) and you can really tell the difference between the DVD and the bluray films. We have a 32" LCD tv and in combo it looks superb and makes DVDs on a SD tv look quite ropey. The bluray player in the PS3 also upscales DVDs, now I don't know how it works but again you can see a difference can't you ? I guess if I had to buy a standalone player I would probably wait as I am not sure who will win out altho bluray does appear to be edging it at the mo. I got the bluray player inc in the PS3 so it's not really a big deal is it ? As for the porn Shamus I thought a deal was in the offing to allow such films to be on bluray but obviously I don't really know much about that as those kind of films don't interest me !!! Grain
I didn't take your comments as narky LFC . I'll probably end up with a PS3 also, but I am warming to the 360, so who knows. In the end I still don't care who wins the format war, the HD-DVD discs I'll have will be as good as their BR counterparts (at least so far all movies that have been released on both are equal, eventually BR's greater capacity may prove different), so I'll not need to rebuy them on BluRay. Right now in Canada HD-DVD players are 1/2 price of BR players, so that along with their greater compatibility with older HD-TV sets (component video) decided it for me. As I said, it was a rumour and nothing else. Problem is that damage has been done yet again to $onys' reputation as a corporate bully.
