Here is the error message that comes up on my Philips DVD+-RW drive when I tried to burn mini DVD (Ridata) at 2x write speed. It started up briefly but crashed soon after: I/O error! I tried looking for updated firmware for the Philips DVD8701 model which came shipped with my Dell system (Windows XP SP2 Professional) but there weren't any updates. LIGHTNING UK! Posted August 15, 2007 Share Posted August 15, 2007 If you can't use any other media you'll have to change your drive to one that can burn them - yours does not appear to be able to. You could try crossflashing to a BenQ 1640 if you've exhausted all attempts at getting it working. There's nothing 'wrong' with ImgBurn, the drive is just erroring out and ImgBurn is reporting the error. Your drive has its own internal software called "firmware". ImgBurn and other burning programs send a set of instructions to your drive telling it what to do and when to do it. Your drive will "listen" for these instructions and will usually do as it's told. If the firmware has a bug of some sort, it will occasionally not do what it's supposed to do. The people responsible for making the drive can issue what's called a "firmware update". This update is like a Windows update for your drive. It can correct problems or add new commands that Lightning_UK! and other programmers can utilise. Secondly, your drive is only as good as the media you put into it. Think of your media or disks as ingredients in a cake. If you use substandard ingredients in a cake it will show in the finished product. The same goes for media. If you use cheap and nasty media you're going to have problems. Use only Verbatim +R, Verbatim -R, Verbatim +R/DL or Taiyo Yuden -R and you'll be fine. Crossflashing can be done with certain drives because some drive manufacturers outsource to other companies. For example: Sony don't make their own drives. They're made by Lite-On. The same drive can be installed with different firmware from different companies. As drive A and drive B are essentially the same, they can use the firmware (internal software) from a different manufacturer. If you have problems with anything (such as understanding the different media types above) - ask. It's what we're here for. As Lightning_UK! said above, Imgburn isn't the source of most problems. nwasquad Posted August 15, 2007 Author Share Posted August 15, 2007 yea I tried looking for a firmware update but Philips no longer makes/issues the drive I have so their site doesnt have a firmware update. I was able, however, to crossflash to a BenQ drive and use BenQ's website to get a firmware update but I'm still having trouble getting the drive to read/write my media. And for the record I am using Ritek/Ridata mini DVD with RitekG04 ink (supposedly Ritek changed their dye to one of poorer quality now but I still have the good dye in my batch). Finally, does imgburn automatically close sessions? i was trying to find that feature and i couldnt so i am asking. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sounds like you're stuck then I'm afraid and you'll probably have to buy a new drive. To answer your other question - yes, ImgBurn always closes tracks / sessions / discs when it burns them. nwasquad Posted August 15, 2007 Author Share Posted August 15, 2007 yup Lightning, even with my drive running with the BSRB firmware as a BenQ 1640, it's not burning; not to mention the only supported speed that comes up for the discs is still just 4x (same as in the original log). I DID however find a way to burn what I needed. I had an older computer that I'd used for about 10 years and still kept around with a now extinct Pioneer Drive and with that Pioneer drive I was able to burn my mini DVDs at 1x, 2x, and/or 4x (which is why I thought it weird the BenQ could only support and burn at 4x).
