Looks like another Dual Layer DVD problem....

I've wasted about 4 DL DVD's via Nero. I'm trying to back up various files. The biggest burn i'm attempting is 7.5GB (obviously well within the capacity of the DVD).

 

Key note #1 here guys :: i have done this before using Nero and it worked fine. I'm attempting nothing different to what has worked for me in the past. Whatever firmware i have now ... i had it in the past when it last worked. Whatever my Nero version is ... i had it in the past when it last worked etc.

 

But i was getting errors relating to [disc at once] ... someone recommended ImgBurn to me, so i figured i would try it

 

Just downloaded it, attempted to burn, and got an error message.

 

Key note #2 ::: I can burn various files (using Nero) on a DVD+RW perfectly fine, no problems. But it seems to be when going the Dual Layer route that i'm facing problems.

Update the firmware and try again.

If you'd have read any of the other DL post on this (or any other) forum you'd have already seen that pretty much the only DL discs people recommend are Verbatim ones.

Just a query then...

 

I have just checked on the dual layer DVDs that worked the last time i wanted to back up this amount. There is no label on them whatsoever.

 

I have read other people's DL problems & did note the verbatim comment, but i dismissed this simply because i have used other DVD's before, that are unbranded and work.

 

I use unbranded CD's all the time & they always work. I use unbranded single layer DVD's that work all the time no problem. The last set of dual layer DVD's i worked were unbranded and worked.

the DL DVD's i'm using at the moment that are failing, have "Datawrite" on them. I have used CD's & DVD's with this on the label & they've always worked.

 

 

So why should THESE dl dvd's i'm using not work?

 

Also, why would the firmware be an issue when the firmware that is currently installed is the same firmware that was installed the last time that dl burning worked for me?

 

 

I'm not for a minute saying you're wrong. I just do not understand why, what worked last time, is what you're saying could possibly be the reason it is no longer working.

 

To me that doesn't make sense. I'd just like to understand before i go down this route.

Although it may have worked before, burning discs is not quite as simple as working/not working.

 

There are hundreds of levels between something working and not working. You've no idea how close to 'not working' your 'working' burns were - if you catch my drift?!

 

Not only that, things change. Drives wear out and discs degrade. There's nothing constant in this business except the software you're using - which of course does not deteriorate over time

 

You also have to take into account that the brand name (or lack of it) stamped on a disc doesn't mean anything at all. It's the dye that's important and a brand may make use of several differeny dye types. So there's nothing to say that the first spindle of discs you buy from a certain brand will be the same as the next lot.

 

That aside, your drives firmware should always be kept up-to-date. To not update it is to still be running Windows 95 in the year 2007 - i.e. stupid.

Ok, thanks for the clear up

 

I've read up & found that updating, could possibly lead to drive failure.

 

I have a few things i need to burn (i.e. mp3s to CD, and back up most of my files to a single layer DVD, which i know will work) & then i'll get to updating & attempting a DL burn.

 

Are you saying this MIGHT or WILL work with my DL problem?

Yeah and you could get run over if you leave your house tomorrow.

 

Sites have to mention that sort of thing to cover their backs. Short of having a powercut in the exact 30 seconds it takes to update the drive, it's 99% fool proof.

 

I wouldn't even consider mentioning something if I wasn't perfectly happy to do it myself.... and where firmware updates are concerned, I've probably done more than just about anyone! I do have quite a collection of drives now and I'm always on the lookout for firmware updates!

 

It's a complete waste of time reporting any sort of issue with anything unless you know you're as up-to-date as you can be with everything involved in the process.

 

As for being 100% sure it'll fix the issue, nobody can say that for sure, it's impossible. I don't like the discs you're using and the drive is quite old. What I can tell you is that NEC haven't spent their time and money producing a firmware update for people NOT to use it! They're there to fix issues and improve the quality of the burns. Fingers crossed it sorts out your issue.

Thanks for your help on this dude. The firmware update SEEMS to have fixed the issue

 

I have wasted 7 out of 10 DVDs on this, but then i did the update & the 8th DVD worked.

 

I have 5 folders for Dual Layer backup. I have ordered some Verbatim DVD's off ebay.co.uk. I should probably put all 5 on them.
