DVD-RAM drive reads as CD drive

DVD-RAM drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B DL13 010119064B3CC619FE

 

Installed Nero 8 Trial. Burned ISO bin file to CD: Exiled (2006) ESPiSE DVDRip KVCD Brady. Didn't like Nero so

 

uninstalled. Disk inserted into DVD-RAM drive now reads as CD Drive for all media (see screen shot... as soon as

 

Windows xp sees loaded disk in device it displays the window asking what s/ware you want to use and at this point

 

Windows Explorer shows the drive change from DVD to CD .... weird is there is a choice in this window "using <need

 

provider>" see .jpg). Will play and dvd recorded as movies. Firmaware update from DL11 to DL13. Still only ImgBurn

 

can read as DVD Drive and produced this report....

Search for ASAPI.dll file missing on C drive. ASPI driver present WNASPI32.dll in Windows/system. Ran forceaspi1.7

 

no change. Searched net for asapi manager and found nothing useful (one thing ata time stuck with updating aspi

 

first then reboot). Updated adaptec aspi from their site and still no change. Ran ImgBurn again showing debug.

Clues in "No Additional Sense Information"? Initialising SPTI lets ImgBurn see any disc but windows xp nor anyone else can. That's all I got in me for now! Cheers PS how does one attach a .jpg as I need to show the weird windows window asking what you want to do with the media "using <need provider>" with strange characters.

It's default behaviour of Windows XP to show the drive as a CD Drive when there's a blank disc inside. As for the "<need provider>" option that's probably some leftover from some program you've used before and it's completely unrelated to ImgBurn.

 

By the way, you really should leave ImgBurn with its default settings (Tools/Options/click Defaults and confirm) as that works best for everyone

as per mmalves , Ive had 2 LG RAM drives that always show as CD drives with blank discs in, wether they be CD or DVD, dont worry, ImgBurn knows what the media is before it burns it

Good Morning and thanks for the info. I tried a few other burning products but liked ImgBurn the best. Sadly now my other dvd utilities I use (such as Converxttodvd, etc.) are now useless. I can't even use blanks to back-up *argh*. I must have been lucky with the LG before I pulled Nero 8 as it read everything (even crappy memorsux I keep getting for bdays and xmas). I see my next search to fix this is beyond the specifics of this forum so I'm off to the net. Any suggestions? Is it even possible to fix? Much appreciate your fast support and great software product! Wish I'd had found ImgBurn first as I wouldn't have needed to even try Nerohog. Cheers again

regarding convertxtodvd, i use this, and i save to a folder, then use ImgBurn in build mode

 

as for the overall issue, i dont think you will find a fix for it im afraid , i didnt even bother looking and just lived with it

as i said earlier. ImgBurn knows what media is in the drive so thats all that matters for me

Isee. Good logic there using ImgBurn Build. I found the LG GSA-4167B has power issues and some have had success removing, as in my case, an older not oft used cdburner to free up power. Also upgrading power supply has worked. I'm going to pull the cdburner doorstop and see what happens .... this will require another pot of coffee. Anyone else tried this? Cream and sugar?

Pulled old cdrw and GSA-4167B will read DVD-RAM disks (great as I have all important stuff back-up there!). Still no luck on other blank media still readingas CD. Bonus? Windows wants me to reactivate in 3 days lol. I tried playing with ImgBurn Build and Write and they won't support, say, moving one of my fav .avi files so I can watch on laptop (unless I missed something). Anyone recommend a good DVD burner?

Sorry, what exactly is the problem here?

 

When you put a blank DVD into the drive the name changes from 'DVD-RAM Drive' to 'CD Drive' ?

 

As mentioned several times, that's normal.

 

Windows doesn't support burning onto DVD+ (plus) or DVD- (minus) format media. It basically sees such discs as 'unknown' media and just defaults to labelling the drive as a 'CD Drive'. There's nothing wrong with that, it happens to everyone - including me.

 

So what really is the problem?

 

If you can put a disc in the drive and ImgBurn will see it just fine and give you all the info about it in the info window on the right, there really is no problem/issue.

 

Are you perhaps then worrying about nothing?

 

If you remember that ImgBurn is just a burner (i.e. it doesn't convert anything), copying an AVI to a DVD isn't a problem. Your laptop will play AVI files so you don't need to convert anything.

 

Just drag + drop the AVI in the Build modes 'Source' window and then burn it.

 

You'll end up with an AVI file on the disc that you can play by simply double clicking on it in Explorer.

 

Any standalone player that supports playing avi/divx files will also be able to play it just fine.

Greetings! Problem is this just happened and I had no idea it was normal. Until 24 hours ago windowsxp had recognized anything and everything I threw in the LG ... for more than a year now. I removed Nero and suddenly lost readbility of DVD?blank. Anyway, I'm learning your software and so will spend more time on that as I tried your suggestion and successfully burned a copy of an .avi (Faster the motogp movie .... awesome!) to a DVD+RW and played on laptop. Only thing the log reported as of possible concern was the following DeviceIoControl:

You can solve that deviceiocontrol error by reading the FAQ.

 

Basically some other program you have open is currently accessing the drive and so ImgBurn cannot take hold of the drive for it's own exclusive usage.
