canary Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Hi all, Is there any reason why I should be having the above problems ? My drive is a USB Plug In - LG HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA-4167B My discs are Datawrite 8x 4.7GB DVD-R I keep getting an O/S code and failure Thanks, C
mmalves Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Please post the log from that attempt (you can find it at Help/ImgBurn Logs).

canary Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Install the DL13 firmware. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2126 Hi Lightning and thanks for taking the time to reply. Unfirtunately I can't open the link BUT can find the DL 13 Firmware download on a few other sites - is this OK / safe ? What does this actually do ? As a complete novice can you offer any installation guidance - flashing etc... frightens me in case I ruin something ? BIG thanks, C
LOCOENG Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 The link worked fine for me. Firmware updates increase compatability with new media and improve write strategies among other things. All the necessary instructions on flashing your drive should be included in the readme.txt file included with the download. Make sure no discs are in the drive when flashing.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 It's a case of loading the exe (once downloaded) and clicking 1 button. I'm pretty sure you can manage that The firmware fixes issues with the drive burning certain discs and adds support for newer ones. It's also improves the general quality of burns. (So basically you want to keep it updated just as you do your OS)
JasonFriday13 Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) I have the exact same drive, except mine is internal. Flashing is exactly as LUK said, open the .exe, and clicking the update button. I just did mine with a read speed update (flasher patched) . [edit] I used LUK's previous tool to test the read speed (I usually don't have it installed on my machine - this test is purely in the name of science). I used The Green Mile as my test. The size is about 7GB. The average read rate is 8x, peaking at 10.5x. The time it took was 10:34, it usually took more than a half hour to copy. My drive has a new lease on life! . mmalves Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I 20:49:07 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: TTG02) (Speeds: 4x, 8x) Those discs are low quality. Get Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden blanks and you'll never have problems again
canary Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 So is this solely the problem - nothing else ? Thanks, C
chewy Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 you could lower the burn speed to 4X and keep trying those disks, maybe get one or two to work, test the disks in another computer/dvd burner with crap media expect to have failures I just coastered a verbatim disk, even they are not what they used to be
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 At least the DL13 firmware meant the disc size was calculated correctly, even if it can't burn them!
canary Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 So please tell me - what is the report telling you ? Last problem I was told to upgrade to DL13 (was DL10) - will these discs work with different software - is this sensitive ? Thanks, R
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 It's telling me your drive doesn't like burning to that media. Get some Verbatim / Taiyo Yuden discs instead.
LOCOENG Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Last problem I was told to upgrade to DL13 (was DL10) - will these discs work with different software - is this sensitive ? The firmware is the first fix to see if compatability issues can be overcome. Your first log indicated a different MID than your second log, but both are undesirable media. Take the advice and get some Verbatims or Taiyo Yuden and don't stray from the yellow brick road.
dontasciime Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Whilst on the subject of yellow try some cotton buds if you try again with anything other than the good peoples recommendations.
