jmet
Where did you download the firmware? Was it a zip file? Did you extract all files or did you just double click the setup file within the zip container?
LIGHTNING UK!
How is the drive connected? IDE / USB / Firewire etc? What controller is it on (if the answer to the above is IDE) ? If IDE, have you tried updating the controller drivers? They could be blocking the commands used by the firmware flasher.

jmet
Extract all the files to a folder on your hard drive. Then go to that folder and click the setup file in that folder.
Shamus_McFartfinger
Also, make sure there's no disk in the drive before flashing.
LIGHTNING UK!
Plug it in internally if it won't work in your USB enclosure. I'm not sure you can go far wrong wit the actual update process, it's only 2 files in a zip!

LIGHTNING UK!
Well I guess the first thing you need to do is take it out of the external enclosure. When you've done that, take the side off your PC, locate the IDE cable / spare IDE socket on the motherboard and connect it up. Don't forget the power lead! It's hard for us to tell you exactly how to do it until we know more about the internals of your machine.
dontasciime
you should have two files after extracting rar or zip A0814001.118 which is the firmware and the flasher R115D.exe I flashed mine in a Usb enclosure but there are many different chipsets in enclosures. The chipset in the enclosure I flashed mine in was GL811E try downloading the firmware I used http://rapidshare.com/files/85925345/DVR115D_FW118EU2.zip The above download also has mcse in package ignore that and just make sure you have the 2 files at top of post in same directory. Make sure the drive is jumpered to master when in enclosure
