Unable to lock XL1B Media Changer on 2nd disk

So I did a lot of reading and searching, and I think this is a new one. Like it says in the title. I have a Sony XL1B media changer and I'm trying to burn a bunch of disks with ImgBurn que feature. The program seems to communicate with the jukebox well (i.e. loading/unloading disks), but when it finishes the first disk, ejects to the 1st slot, inserts the 2nd disk, checks if the 2nd blank, then tries to burn, I get an error:

 

DeviceIoControl(FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME) failed!

Unable to Lock Volume for exclusive access

Reason: Access is Denied.

 

Now I know what you're thinking. RTFM!! yeah, so I did that. The only process running is Imgburn.exe (but there's 3 of them).

Normally, after I just open the program, there's only two running.

 

There's nothing else trying to access the burner at that time except for imgburn and I don't have Symantic (I use AVG). If I hit continue it'll work. I just kinda defeats the purpose of an automatic changer if I have to hit a button every time to skip disks.

 

Is there something I'm doing wrong here? Maybe a setting in ImgBurn that I can turn of the locking function. Here's the degug log for a "continued" burn.

To disable locking go to Tools/Settings/Write tab, then disable Lock Volume - Exclusive Access; but be advised that when you disable this option other programs (including Windows itself) can interfere with the burn process and possibly make coasters out of your discs.

You might like to update the firmware on the drive in that changer, yours is kinda old now.

 

As for the locking thing, I didn't notice anything odd last time I used it for multiple burns. I'll try and give it another look today at some point if I get the chance.

So I updated the firmware on my VGP-XL1B or Matshita DVD-RAM SW-9584 (1394) from version B100 to version B107 (I found to firmware on http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2075 ). The update went without a hitch, but after the reboot it seems that the update broke the drive. Every disc I put in now, it spins a bit (I can hear it searching), then gives me a:

 

Device Not Ready (Tracking Servo Error)

 

Its not the media, as this was the same Verbatim DVD+R discs that I used before the update. I've also tried different disks (i.e. philips, sony, imation, and el-cheapo) with the same results. The drive was kind of loud when burning at full speed to begin with though. Kind of a loud vibrating noise, like something was off balance in there. Anyway I've been looking all morning for the B100 firmware to roll back to and haven't had any luck. So if anyone know where to find one, or can copy the FW in their working jukebox I'd greatly appreciate it.

Btw, I decided to remove the "Exclusive lock" feature but I can't test it yet.

You're right... I can't flash it again, because the flashing program sees the latest version on it and then quits. I did however, end up taking the whole thing apart to investigate what I thought was a loud noise.

 

[side note: It's just a regular EIDE DVD-RAM in there, it may be pretty easy to replace the internals of the drive with something faster or like a blue-ray burner]

 

After taking it down to nuts and bolts I found a piece of dirt on the spindle that may have caused the disk to wobble. I removed it, cleaned it with alchohol, put it back together and it works fine. It still kind of makes the same noise, but I think that may be normal (I have my laser printer sitting on top of it, and it might be pressing the sheet metal together). Anyway, I'm gonna test to see if the firmware upgrade solved my locking problem after I get back from work today. As for now, all is fine.

 

Thanx again for your help I was starting to sweat a little there. I paid $500 for this thing last summer, I was hoping I didn't turn it into a paper weight (its kind of upsetting to see them go for $99 +free shipping on surplus sites). Now ImgBurn makes this thing worth its weight in GOLD!!!!!!!! If I could export a list of successfully burned disks, with their image names, and slot locations to a printer (or better yet import it to a label making program so I could print labels and just stick em on as I pull the disks outta the burner) It'd be worth even more!!!

The firmware won't fix the locking problem, that's software/OS related.
