MeDotOrg Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I've used image burn for some time now. Until installing the latest version my burns were at 4x to 8x depending on the media (Currently use Sony and Taiyo Yuden - this log is with Taiyo Yuden), Since installing the newest version (2.4) my burn speed are crawling at 1.2X. Computer has plenty of RAM (3GB) and adequate horsepower (Athlon 3800 Dual Core). Something has changed and I'm not sure what it is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! CompNetTeach Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 There does appear to be an increase in performance requirements for 2.4. I have ImgBurn installed on my older PIII laptop with WinXP Pro SP2 AutoUpgrade that I carry around to & from courses (the older laptop helps keep the students from trying to steal it, plus it was one of the ones with a privacy screen option). When burning with 2.4, from time to time, I notice that the buffers start emptying out (device & ImgBurn), under 2.3.x, ImgBurn's buffer only ever dropped to around 75%. Of course, as the buffers emptied, the drive slows down. I switched back to 2.3 (it was tough finding the old version on the Internet!) for the laptop, and the performance has returned to original levels. Suggestion: please leave a link up for an older version on the ImgBurn website! Some fine tuning required?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I can't think why that would be the case. The slowest part of a PC is the drives I/O throughput and that's not going to change, CPU usage is normally quite low - although I'm not exactly testing it on such an old PC to check. I'd be interest to see what your CPU % usage is during burning on that machine with each version. There's a thread that does all the reading within the program and it should be running as quickly as the drive will allow for. At the end of the day, if the buffer empties out it's because the program can't read from your hdd quickly enough.
CompNetTeach Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 When burning on its own, Task Manager shows typically only a few % points more required by 2.4 vs 2.3 (under 25% if the computer is otherwise idle). However, the buffer emptying is more common when using a compressed NTFS volume as the source. I suspect that in this situation, Microshaft is shafting ImgBurn in terms of priority access to the drive with its background tasks? Might it be time to force a higher priority for ImgBurn?
dr_ml422 Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 It's already on high. Hi Lightning. My Samsung Sh-S202J SB00 is also burning slower. I noticed a red new sign next to SB01 in the firmware page. Does this mean that's the new firmware 4 my burner? I'm new to this part. Thnx. Also would the check marks in lock volume and enable burn proof in the write option under tools have anything to do w/slowing down my burner? It went from a steady 8 as I usually use to 4x. Btw it fluctuates sometimes and hits 8. Any suggestions always appreciated as always.
dontasciime Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Only if your firmware is SB00 is SB01 newer Btw ImgBurn's defaults are the best so unticking things will not help.
dr_ml422 Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Defragment time? Hi Donta. Hi Loco. I'm going to defrag anyway but it's not bad. Also might hold off on the new firmware. Just burned 4 discs w/this burner at 8x and everything good. Seems I have to close any other app. whether I'm using it or not for the burn to go through smooth w/out a hitch. In this case it was my copy/back-up proggie which I minimized but would sometimes have the original in the other drive after it backed it up. @Loco. That asian chic is still rocking but Mmalves new chic is off the hook. Lol...
dr_ml422 Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Why not start a new thread and post a log. Ok. Sounds like a good idea. Does Imgburn keep logs of previous burns or does it erase the previous ones and posts the latest? If it keeps them then I could post a log right now in a new thread. If not give me a few and I'll try to simulate exactly what I did and then post that. Cool.
dr_ml422 Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Help/ImgBurn logs Ok. I got it. I'll open new thread. Thnx.
