St3alth Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Yesterday I attempted to burn my first xbox 360 game - and got some unexpected errors. First off, I unfortunately have no idea what brand/type of burner I have. It is a laptop built by alienware so all I know is that it is supposedly a dual-layer burner (the drive is labeled as a "SATA Optiarc DVD RW A (SCSI)" if that helps). I am using good 2.4x Verbatim DVD+R DL disks, so I know the disks aren't the problem. So I load the program, put the blank disk in, and set the layerbreak and the write speed. Since I don't know what I am doing with changing the booktype I just leave it alone. Once I click start burn, the program never starts to actually burn - it just stops. Furthermore, it makes my computer freeze up - I am not able to cancel the burn or even open my drive, and so I am forced to restart my computer to get it back to normal. It looks like an odd controller problem to me, your drive has a messed up identifier string. Do you know what controller the drive is attached to? Is it SATA or PATA? Who makes the chipset?

I think SATA, but I'm not really sure. I have no idea who makes the chipset. I bought this laptop custom made from alienware. Is there anywhere I could go in My Computer or something to find that info? mmalves Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Try using SIW or Sandra to find out which chipset your laptop uses.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Basically your drivers a 'wrapping' the commands sent to the drive and are screwing everything up. When you've sorted them, the drive name will show up properly with it mentioning 'optiarc' AND the model name.
St3alth Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 after looking around with SIW, I'm pretty sure the drive is connected to an SATA controller made by Intel past that, I don't really know what I am doing with sorting the drivers or knowing what I'm looking for, so maybe you can help me out by telling me what I'm looking for from these screenshots from SIW and again, thanks for any help any of you can offer me, it is much appreciated
Cynthia Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Not knowing the brand of your mother board - I found some others that had the same string issue as you. I have also tried the 2 different SATA controllers on my motherboard (The intel yellow ones ICH9R, and Gigabyte purples ones. I'm using the purples one at the minute) Just to update, It sees the drive as it should now. I switch it back to the Intel controller. Still doesn't like burning CD's tho... http://club.cdfreaks.com/f86/optiarc-ad-7201s-256203/ It might be that you have the SATA burner attached to the JMicron controller. In the manual for my Asus mother board it states to avoid connecting cdrom devices to those channels/connections.

JMicron drivers can be found here: ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmb36x/Win2k_xp_Vista/ Make sure your motherboard bios is up-to-date as that'll no doubt update the JMicron bios too.

Thanks for all the awesome help - I just don't know exactly what I'm doing and would probably end up screwing my computer up more than helping it, so I'm probably just going to try out an external burner and see how it works out. Anyone have any recommendations on what type/brand of dual-layer burner I should look for?
Cynthia Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 The easiest thing you could try is to move the cable to another SATA connector on the motherboard.
