Average and maximum write speed stuck at 14x

Hi guys, I was burning CD-Rs since several days now. My drive supports these write speeds: 16x, 24x, 32x, 40x and 48x.

When I choose 2x as the burn speed, it correctly detects the misscompare and switches to 16x write speed since it is the closest to 2x the drive supports.

But the problem comes here: when I see the logs at the end of the burning session, it ALWAYS burned at a maximum speed of ~14.1x and the average write speed is always 14x. So it never actually burns at 16x as stated in the logs.

Before you answer that this is because it tries to burn at less than 16x because I selected 2x read this: This happens always, no matter which speed I choose. I tried with 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 14x, 16x, 18x and 20x and all of them ended in the same logs: average write speed of 14x and maximum about 14.1x.

Where is the problem?

My drive is an ATAPI iHAS122 on a desktop computer.

The logs of a burning session selecting 20x as the write speed:

What happens if you pick 24 or 32 as the write rate? Does it still max out at 14x?

The 14x could actually be a cosmetic issue as I fixed an issue to do with CD read and write rates a million years ago. There hasn't been a new 'public' release since I fixed it.

Hi! I am doing that test right know. I chose 24x as the write speed, I will be back in a few minutes. I will also make some tests at 32x and let you know.

Well, I burned 3 CD-Rs at 24x and another 3 at 32x, just to dicard random variations.

With 24x the average write speed of 14x was finally broken, and so it was with 32x.

For a chosen write rate of 24x the average speed was 20.1x and the maximum was 21.2x, for the three CDs.

For a chosen write rate of 32x the average speed was 23.3x and the maximum was 28.2x, for the three CDs.

I drop here the logs of one of the burns at 32x:

Why is it always burning at a lower speed than the chosen speed?

It isn't... the calculation is just a bit off.

Drives usually ramp up to their chosen speed slowly throughout the burn. So if you pick 32x, it may start at 16x and then build up to 32x... which would only be reached at the very outer edges of the disc (i.e. when you've filled the disc up 100%).

Yes, it depends on how much data you've written to these CD-R's.  If it stayed at 24x and you wrote an entire CD-R full of data, I'd be wary.  But, if you didn't fill an entire disc, it may only have reached 24x by the time it got to finishing writing data.
