When trying to burn an iso image to disk, in the first part of the process a single error occurred:

W 18:19:19 DeviceIoControl(IOCTL_CDROM_EXCLUSIVE_ACCESS, Lock, 1) Not Supported! - Reason: Incorrect function.

However, in the verify process, I quickly got this failure message:

What did I do wrong and how do I fix it?

Post the whole log of that burn (previous logs can be found in ImgBurn's Help menu). As for the locking problem look in the FAQ.

hmmm....

rumors say that the Slim model UJ-850S is a very bad optical device....

make sure your firmware's up2date and burn at 4x....

Presuming you're referring to "W 18:19:19 DeviceIoControl(IOCTL_CDROM_EXCLUSIVE_ACCESS, Lock, 1) Not Supported! - Reason: Incorrect function." as the locking problem, I'm having trouble finding anything about it in FAQ. What keywords do you suggest that I search?

no Laurie... you really need to be sure you have the Latest Up2Date firmware...

thats step #1

you have a --> MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S 1.50

i think there's a 1.90 firmware update outthere....

you have a Toshiba Laptop?

8x is the lowest possible. :)

The right firmware, if there's any, should be available in the Support section of your laptop manufacturer's website.

apparently this 1.61 UJ-850U firmware works also on the UJ-850S

I'm afraid I'm too freaked out by all the warnings I get about what terrible damage I can do to my computer by "flashing the wrong driver upgrade" to feel confident with your use of the word "apparently." Is there anyway you can explain how you came to that conclusion? I'm really at the end of my rope here as it is clear that there is no upgrade for the UJ-850s...my version.

You have this

MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S 1.50

and the update is for that drive.

Just make sure that you have no disc in the drive and all other programs closed down while you flash it.

That's where I looked in the first place, but the only drivers listed are for:

Chipset Intel

Audio Conexant

Bluetooth Broadcom

Camera Bison

Camera Logitech

CardReader TI

Lan Realtek

Modem Agere

TouchPad Synaptics

VGA ATI

VGA Intel

Is the CD-DVD included somewhere in one of those?

No. Firmware is not listed there.

If the firmware should be for the wrong drive, the installer (from what I've seen with my drives) tell you that.

Yes...I know what I have currently. But my problem is that I cannot find an update specifically for UJ-850s. Yikes!

There are many firmwares that works on several drives in the same model series.

This one seems to be one of those.

Instead of trying to update the firmware, have you tried other brands of blanks? The ones LUK suggested in post #3 are the best you can get, and even if you can't find them, try the brands you can get until you find one that works with your burner.

Alternatively you can burn that to a DVD disc and it should work just the same.

Well, I gave it a shot and was told that the 1.61 UJ-850U did not apply to my device. Now what?

The suggestion in post #22 seems to be your only option. I couldn't find any later/different firmware for that drive.

Option 2 if the above doesn't work is to get a nice external drive.

Sometimes it works if you select another of the supported write speeds. Might also be that the quality of those cd's are not the best.

Although I've tried everything except buying an external drive, no such luck! So I think I'll just give it up for now and keep my fingers crossed that I won't need the bootable recovery disk I've been trying to create for more than a week. But mucho thanks to all for your help and patience.
