Session Never Closes

Hi,

Im burning to a DVD+RW disk. Everything seems to go okay, but the session never closes. Here's a log:

Will my disk be affected if I just close ImgBurn and eject it? Also how reliable is the verify feature? I can never get through it without read errors. I'm using Sony DVD+RW disks, so they should be fairly high quality right? Are read errors necessarily bad? Is there an acceptable amount before quality is noticeably affected?

You shouldn't get any read errors and your drive shouldn't crap out when ImgBurn asks it to close the session.

 

As such, I'd say your drive doesn't support the discs you're using very well, buy some different ones (Verbatim).

 

Also note that rewritable media is never as good as the write once stuff.

 

What make PC did your drive come in? There might be a newer firmware available for it, but I need the make of the PC before I can go looking for you

I have two computers to potentially use. I kept getting a lot of read errors on my first one. A Dell Dimension E310 with an HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N drive. LG right? The computer that I can't close the session on is a Dell Inspiron 530S with an HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H73N ATA Device. That's all my computer recognizes it as. Thanks for the brand tip. Why is rewritable media worse? Also, I've read on several forums that many people don't trust and therefore don't use the verify feature, and considering that no disc is perfect, that read errors are difficult to avoid. I don't know obviously though.

 

I just canceled the session and it plays okay. I didn't do a verify on it. I looked up my DVD type (Sony DVD+RW) on Afterdawn.com and most people say that Sony is very high quality and that the results are comparable to verbatim. I guess I let you tell me whether my drive type is the problem and whether verbatim would be better for it.

Ok, being in a Dell machine, you can probably update to the C109 firmware found here - http://www.firmwarehq.com/LG/GSA-H73N/files.html

 

Rewritable discs can obviously be erased and are therefore made differently (and have different properties) to write once media. Being erasable means they're not as good (higher error rates, making them harder to read/write) as write once stuff and you should therefore avoid using them unless you really really need to.

 

People who make comments about the usefulness of the verify feature on forums usually have their own reasons for not using it but I bet 99% are speaking out of their a....

 

If I didn't think it was useful, I wouldn't have wasted my time implementing it or defaulting it to 'enabled'.

 

Verify reads every sector on the disc just as they'd be read if you tried to access anything on the disc (file wise) via Explorer or whatever. If the drive can't read a certain sector in a given file, a file copy in explorer would/should also fail - and that's a big problem if your disc contains important data or anything that needs to be 100% correct/available!

 

As I said before, you should never accept read errors on your burn. If you get them, consider it useless. For DVD Video (if you're really cheap and don't want to archive such a disc) you can probably get away with it because it'll just cause a few pixelated frames or whatever (assuming it doesn't totally crash the player).

 

Don't for 1 second think it's normal to get errors though. It's like going out for some beers in town one Friday night and expecting to get punched in the face. Yes it might happen to the loud mouthed twats that like to cause trouble, but (thank God) they're a minority.

 

If you use a decent drive/firmware/media combo you'll never have a problem.

 

Oh and no, Sony discs aren't as good as Verbatim. The Verbatim DVD-RW are more reliable than the DVD+RW in my experience.

Awesome! I updated the firmware. It had absolutely no problems at all. I put one of the practice disks in i had been using and it burned to it, popped it right out and then retracted to verify and i didn't get any errors. I never would have thought it was the drive. Thanks for showing me that.

 

And yeah, i pretty much assumed that the people on the forum were dopes but it was quite a few saying they didn't like it.

 

In any case, now that i've been enlightened about disk media, I'm most likely going to get verbatim. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and i don't like knowing that it could be better and then settle for something less. I've worked on my project too long. So, I don't really get the plus or minus thing. Is it just a different format? Do i need DVD+R or DVD-R?

 

And, how important is setting booktype? Every time I've tried i get an error, even after the firmware update.

 

ImgBurn is an awesome program. I like the funny lines in it; makes it more human. Free is definitely one of the best aspects. I'd donate but i'm poor and i gotta go buy those disks.

Would it do the booktype function automatically?

LG burners don't support booktyping DVD+RW media, hence why such option is missing from the LG tab of the Change Book Type feature.
