'Not an appropriate container format'

I'm trying to copy a CD-ROM to an 'iso file so that I can use the disc image with a virtual CD drive.

 

When trying to create the disc image, I set it up to save as an .iso file but I get an error message as attached.

So 1) why can't I copy it as an .iso; 2) if I save as a .bin file, will my virtual CD drive still be able to load it?

1. Because the disc is in a format that's not suitable for storing in that type of file. (it tells you that in the error box!)

2. Assuming it supports BIN/CUE, yes. Which program are you actually using?

It's Microsoft's Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel. The reason for the question was that I thought that all CDs could be stored as an iso image, y'see. I thought is was like a sort of snapshot of the CD. So that's why - I was surprised - and asked the question!

Only Mode 1/2048 sectors should be put in an ISO file.

 

CD's support Mode1, Mode2/Form1, Mode2/Form 2 and CDDA sectors... so it's perfectly reasonable that ISO is NOT the format (or rather, file extension) to use for an image of the disc.

 

An image file would be a snapshot of the disc, ISO is just one type of image file. BIN/CUE is another one - used to deal with more complex images/discs.

 

You should use something like DAEMON Tools or Virtual CloneDrive for your virtual drive. If you use the latter, enable the creation of CCD files in ImgBurn's settings (Read tab). Then you'll get CCD/CUE/IMG files and you can mount the CCD in Virtual CloneDrive. DAEMON Tools supports CUE/BIN right out of the box.
