hi, im pretty new to this so go steady on me!

Just got imgburn downloaded and im having a problem with my disc formatting.

I have a btc 8x dvdrw ide 1008 burner. when i place a new datawrite dvd+rw disc in the drive, imgburn says i need to format the blank disc, which i then do. The format completes but when i go to start the burn it says "i may not have enough space a my disc, do i want to carry on anyway?"

The blank discs are 4.7Gb and im pretty sure the film isnt bigger than that!

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Carl

A 4.7GB disc can only actually hold approx 4.377GB in computing terms since with discs they classify 1KB as 1000 bytes instead of the more common 1024 bytes which computers use.

Therefore, 4.7GB = 4.7 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 bytes = 4,700,000,000 bytes

4,700,000,000 / (1024 x 1024 x 1024) = 4.377GB or 4,482MB

This is the maximum size on a single layer disc and as there is a small overhead for the filesystem, you will not be able to burn a file of this maximum size (ie. it will have to be a bit less).

I usually aim for about 4,450MB total file size.

Therefore, I would suggest you double-check that the total size of the film is a bit less than this max size.

Sazziei, it sounds like you need a dual-layer disc. The problem is that they don't make a dual-layer RW disc yet. In addition, depending on what you are writing to the disc, there are other things to be considered (layer-break for example).

When i go to 'browse' for the source file there is just one file i think,

What is the file ext. of this file? Eg. .iso .bin .txt etc.

And how did you create it? what software did you use?

hi, i used dvd shrink 3.2 and its an .MDS file.

the problem i think i have is when i format the disk through imgburn, it finishes formatting then when i go to burn it, it pops up and tells me there is almost no space available on the disk, i think thats where the main problem is. All i am doing is testing out this software with a short film.

when i tried again last night, in dvd shrink, instead of having the compression setting at automatic, i set it at custom, so i shrunk the file even lower, so the had to be enough space on a totally empty disk.

Just stick that +rw in the drive and copy + paste the info from the panel on the right.

It'll tell us what we need to know in terms of the space available on it (according to your drive).

Ah well there's your answer right there.

Do a full format in ImgBurn and the 'Current' one should say the same as the 'Maximum' one.

done a full erase of the disc and the section that you were on about is still the same??

Well if you've done a full format it's definitely doing it with the larger of the two sizes.

I would have to say that the firmware is the issue here, so hopefully the new one chewy has found you will fix that.

Have you actually tried burning that image and seeing if it works, or were you put off by the 'it won't fit' message?

yeah, i went ahead with the burn process a couple of times and it only got to about 22% then stopped. just got my new firmare installed, gonna have a another go at a full erase.

I get that when my RWs have bit the dust. Buy a new one.

You can try a full format but it most likely won't work.

In any event, your image size is no worries, you just had some data on the DVD already and now that DVD has proved to be sus.
