Miscompare error

Okay I burned a DVD and got miscompare errors. I thought, okay it's one disc, bound to happen that I'd have a bad burn or something. Tried a couple of times to verify and would keep getting the same issue. So yeah, chalked that up to being a bad burn/disc. Now I'm thinking it may have been just fine (read on).

I did another burn of the same ISO image and started getting the same problem. I figured, okay, something's not right here. So I popped it into another drive (BR burner/etc) and it verified with no issues. Now here are some specs and details to help with figuring this problem out.

I 20:47:41 -> Drive 1 - Info: HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH08LS20 2.00-01 (E:) (ATA)

I 20:47:42 -> Drive 4 - Info: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GP08LU30 1.01-10 (P:) (USB)

Drive 1 is the internal BR drive and I love it (so far never had a problem burning BR's with it, other than trying to overburn a BR disc)

Drive 2 and drive 3 are virtual.

Drive 4 is external and is the one I'm getting the issue with. It's an external slim drive with a cable for using one or two USB ports (second port is to have extra power if one isn't enough). Was using one at first and have done burns with it before without problems, hooked up the second to see if that made a difference and it doesn't.

I have AnyDVD HD installed. I disabled it for drive 4 and it still has the issue. No issues with drive 1, despite AnyDVD HD being active on it.

Now, logically, I'm inclined to think that there is something up with the ext slimdrive. However, I want to know if there could be anything else to check or try before declaring the issue being with the drive.

Oh and before I forget to say it, I had been using DVD Decryptor for years. It's wonderful for what it does (or rather, did). Recently I went looking for something to let me generate ISO's from files, ala Nero, but free. That's how I found ImgBurn. Unless I'm mistaken or misread something, ImgBurn is basically a continuation of DVD Decrypter and, in my opinion, a very worthy one. Nero is nice and all, but has turned into bloatware. I like the simplicity of ImgBurn, where I can do all that is necessary. Create ISO's, rip/burn/verify, etc. To be honest, I can't think of anything that I miss about Nero that ImgBurn doesn't have. So I wanted to say, "Good job!" on this wonderful tool. (Also, good choice of forum software. I use it myself and think it's a solid product.)

I already checked to see if there's a newer firmware for the drive and I'm a bit lost on whether or not there is. The latest version available for download is 1.01-02, but mine is 1.01-10. Unless I'm being stupid, 10 would be a later version than 02, so I don't want to flash to 02 since that would be a downgrade. Any idea if GP08LU30 is just another model but with a different model ID? I was gonna ask on club myce, but haven't had a chance to finish digging around some more first.

If you verify the disc several times with the external drive, do the miscompares all end up being in the exact same place and with the same results (offset, number of differences etc) ?

Maybe it doesn't like the media you're using or needs cleaning.

Can it successfully verify a disc burnt in the WH08LS20 drive?

I believe it does report it in the same places. I recall hitting the option to verify against an image and it felt like the same locations. These were all up front of the verify process, seems like once it moved past the start area that things went fine. I do believe that I had once seen it generate, say, 13 miscompares on one attempt before I canceled it (once it was on it's way) but the following time it only hit 12. Question, if I use the option to 'ignore' miscompares, does it completely ignore them or just not prompt me when it finds them but continues to count them anyway?

I'm using TDK brand DVD's, but then you probably already figured that out. I'll have to give it a try, burning with int. and testing with ext.
