Imgburn & BD-R Media

Let me start by saying Imgburn is a superb program and I am so thankful to have access to it.

I have a Lite-On iHBS112 (CL0K firmware) in my system and use Imgburn to burn media and am having a problem that maybe someone has some ideas about.

I picked up and used a spindle of Merax 1-4x BD-R media with no problems - until the very last disc in the spindle.

It failed very early on, I think because it might have been damaged being the bottom disc in the spindle.

The media appears to be Opto? See below:

Disc ID: OTCBDR-001-000

Disc Type: BD-R

Disc Size: 120mm

Disc Class: 0

Disc Version: 1

Number of Layers: 1

I opened up a new spindle of this same media, and a write operation almost immediately failed. I tried again, thinking a bad disc, but it failed again.

I switched to different BD-R media (Ritek) and they worked perfectly. I also use some Fuji BD-RE media which has also consistently worked perfectly.

When the Ritek media was finished, I went back to the Merax media spindle - and the attempt to write immediately failed. It loads the disc, says it has gone into "writing lead-in" but then throws an error message saying it cannot write. Imgburn log messages follow:

Subsequently I opened a spindle of Imation media (which turns out to be Ritek) and they burn perfectly.

I'm wondering if somehow something has been set inside the firmware due to the bad disc - and now it trashes every media with that OTCBDR-001-000 code? Or maybe I simply had a bad media at the end of the 1st spindle I used of this and the 2nd spindle is also bad? Of course I also have a 3rd spindle of this same stuff (it was on sale). Meritline blew me off because I did not run into this issue right away. I have a message to Merax out with no response yet (I always figured Merax was probably simply a house brand for Meritline, but other stores seem to carry Merax also).

I read elsewhere that enabling OPC in Imgburn might force the drive to re-analyze the media maybe? Any other setting suggestions to give this media a fresh start/chance in this drive before I have to trash 2 25 disc spindles?

Any ideas or thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 If some discs work and others fail the manufacturer has a quality control problem. We have never recommended buying cheap media due to the fact that mostly it's junk and causes more problems than you can believe. Stick with what works for your system/device and firmware and you'll be a happy camper.

I understand what you are saying. The first 25 disc spindle of this media worked perfectly - which is why I grabbed 2 more when they were on sale.

It wasn't until the very last disc in the first spindle that problems started. That's why I thought maybe there was a setting somewhere that would force the drive to reconfigure for this media instead of using whatever default write strategy it is using.

Nope, sorry, but the only way for the drive to be reconfigured is through the firmware. I haven't looked yours up, but you can open ImgBurn, right click on your BR drive and see if there's a newer firmware available.

Yeah - I checked that - and it has the most recent firmware. Of course I have no idea if this media code is even supported specifically in that firmware or if the drive is just using defaults or whatever Lite-On's Smartburn or Hyper Tuning develops. I keep Smartburn enabled, but Hyper Tuning & OPC were disabled. Next time I test - OPC will definitely be enabled but not sure how Hyper Tuning should be set. Thanks.

Try clearing the OPC history via the advanced settings (where HyperTuning etc are configured).

If the drive light double flashes whilst burning the 'OTCBDR-001-000' discs it means HyperTuning has automatically been enabled for the disc - either because you've enabled it by force or because the drive doesn't know how to burn that MID.
