tedych Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Hi, I've been using ImgBurn for at least 2-3 years with great satisfaction. Been using Nero before that. Up until yeasterday I had 2.5.6.0 and it was working consistently at writing all kinds of discs. Ok, there were several months I had not written a single disc. The burner is asus 22B2S, almost 3 years old, with no more than 50 discs burnt. Yesterday I updated to 2.5.8.0. From several discs, most show inconsistent behavior in writing speed. All the same Verbatims 16x, I set 12x writing speed, some stop at 8x at some point and keep burning at 8x until the end of the process. The DVDs are Ok, verify successfully. Others increase the speed to 12x at the end of the burning process, as it should and always have been before. The CD-Rs - I set 24x, they reach 21x and stop there (keep at 21x until the end of the burning process -> flat line). Also Ok. I set 32x, the process flats at 28x somewhere at the middle. Is this some bug in 2.5.8.0, or there is something I miss? Or this can be the burner that goes to its end of life.. Or inconsistent DVDs (as to CDs - after several CDs of the same source, all of them manifest this behavior 24>21, 32->28.). The log is always the same with no signs of any failure or warnings. Thanks. Edited July 22, 2013 by tedych
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 There's a bug in the speed calculation when burning CDs in 2.5.8.0. It's just a cosmetic issue and will result in the speed reading a little low. There should be no such problem for any other type of media though. Drives can sometimes limit their speed and not spin up to the next level if they determine the write quality will suffer. Beyond that, I have no idea why it would be happening. ImgBurn always sends data to the drive as quickly as possible. The drive itself controls the speed.
tedych Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Thanks. The only concern I have with ImgBurn then, was whether 2.5.8.0 changed something in the way it handles the burning process that could result in this behavior. E.g. if I downgrade to 2.5.6.0 it might act the same. I don't want to downgrade and will believe that the drive is somehow limiting the writing speed at 8x (for dvds, and not all - some reach 12x at the end, from the same source spindel). Maybe that's SmartWrite technology or whatever. In the log I see a line which reads SmartWrite: Yes. As to CDs, could you fix that in a future relase please . AFAIK it was working in 2.5.6.0. Edit: Not "SmartWrite: Yes", but the log says SmartBurn: Yes. My fault. Also, there is a different log line with "BURN-Proof: Enabled". Edited July 22, 2013 by tedych
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 No, nothing in 2.5.8.0 would make your drive decide to burn at a slower speed. It's doing that by itself. The CD speed issue is covered here - http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=21692
