I'm using Verbatim BD-RE DL. The burner is Pioneer BDR-205 and is almost six years old. It burns successfully but it fails during verification. The failure will reflect the playback in the Bluray player because the movie will freeze/pixelate. I've started with about 40 of these discs and in the beginning all of them will burn and verify succesfully but as time goes by one by one they will fail verification. Once they fail verification they will never have a successful verification again. I've had a total of about 30 gone bad on me in the last 5 years. When they go bad I send them to Verbatim and they give me new ones and those eventually go bad also and the cycle is repeated. I've tried reformating the discs, burn in Safe Mode, putting the burner in a different PC, and cleaning the laser, all without success.I don't know what to think at this point, is it the burner or discs? If it's the burner then why do some fail verification and some don't. I'm all for buying a new burner IF the problem lies with the burner. Hopefully someone have had a similar problem and can help me out.

I've attached a screenshot along with the log. The screenshot and log are from two different image file burn and verification but they have the same issue.

I guess the only way to know is to take a disc that fails to burn and verify in your aging 205 and try it in a new drive... the 209 perhaps.

If it also fails (you'd probably have to try it a couple of times after doing another full format), you'll know it's the media.

Real verbatim bd-re with a matching mid? Is that the blue/silver ones? Sorry for going OT bit been looking for years since they stopped making them and selling that crap gang fake red/silver packaged ones.

Yeah, I'm surprised you managed to find actual Verbatim MID BD-RE instead of the CMC junk.  However, if they're six years old, that explains it.  :)  I,too, would be interested to know where you managed to get actual Verbatim BD-RE.

Anyway, if your drive is six years old, yeah, replace the drive.   My Pioneer is over a year old and that's a miracle that it still works in terms of optical drives.

They are the deep gray/silver ones (on the burning side). They are 100% genuine.

I got them from Newegg & Tigerdirect. They are fairly easy to get. The Verbatim product number is 97536.

Oh, I forgot we were talking about BD-RE DL.  Yeah, Verbatim's BD-RE DL's are not CMC junk, most likely because CMC probably doesn't make BD-RE DL.  All you can get for BD-RE from Verbatim is that CMC crap.

I was getting ready to order the 209 before posting here for help. I'll go ahead and order it. I'm hoping it's my old 205 that's faulty but I have a feeling it's the discs and not the drive. Thanks for the help.

So Verbatim's BD-RE and BD-RE DL are completely different in terms of quality? Strange. I've never dealt with BD-RE.

Verbatim used to make their own BD-RE and it was of high quality.  Then, like with the CD's and their brick and mortar store Life series DVD's, they switched to CMC junk, the worst media you can buy.  Unfortunately, the only non BD-RE manufacturers I've come across as RITEK, which have playback issues in the Playstation 3, and Maxell's made by Panasonic.  However, the Maxell BD-RE's are rated at 2x but only write at 1x max!

Verbatim is somewhat of a sad company.  They used to be totally reliable but then started getting in bed with CMC like everyone else.  Unfortunately, I foresee a point where Verbatim will go for the bottom dollar and farm out everything they can to CMC.  They'll stop making their own media.

I don't mind importing a DL one lol, they can hold SL too. Mind posting a link?

As far as verbatim recordable media goes I really hope they don't. They are now the last quality media manufacturers when in comes to single use recordable media. Tayo yuden will cease to exist end this year. JVC is shutting down, it's on myce.

Posted

I was not aware that Taiyo Yuden/JVC were shutting down.  I'm not familiar with JVC's media, but I've used many a Taiyo Yuden CD-R.

You know what?  It never occurred to me to get quality Verbatim BD-RE DL's and write single layer images to them!   I do have 1 Verbatim BD-RE DL but it was mostly so I'd have one on hand in case I needed them.  I also have 10 Verbatim inkjet BD-RE DL's but TDK made them.  Which is interesting as TDK BD-RE is typical CMC junk!

Well, it's sadly true.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/optical-drive/anton-shilov/taiyo-yuden-major-maker-of-recordable-optical-discs-exits-the-market/

That will mean that this board can only recommend Verbatim DVD-R going forward after TY ends.  And, the problem there is people will get cheap CMC Verbatims from brick and mortar stores, not knowing we mean the DataLife series which you can only find online, usually.
