Power Calibration Area Error - Bad drive OR configuration issue?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

On my Dell XPS-M1530, I can read/write CDs fine, read DVDs fine but writing DVDs gives an issue. Looked at these forums for the issue - "Power Calibration Area Error" and see the first recommendation as 'Use Verbatim or another high quality disk'. I'm using Verbatim and hence am not sure what to do next. is my infamous drive kaput? Thank you for your assistance.

I went to Tools -> Drive -> Check for Firmware Updates. Got dialog box stating my current firmware version is Q310. Going further to the url provides the following info:

Version Date desc Filename
Q113 16th February, 2011 EP0000228581.exe
Q113 26th August, 2010 MTFOPD-00228581-1022.EXE

Which of these firmware should I install? Thanks for your assistance

On a quick search both seems to come from Sony. Always use the latest date. Seems to be repacked and released again that's why are two.

Anyway, you should find the correct one for your device in the Download section on manufacturer site.

My driver version is Q310 which seems to be a later version than what Imgburn suggests.

Also, have not found a Matshita driver for this drive on any manufacturer site.

Sorry, I missread the firmware numbers.

It's not driver. It's firmware. It's a program installed in the device.

On Dell site the XPS M1530 model is listed as containing PLDS DX-20A6Q HH SATA Trayload DVD+/-RW  or  OPTIARC AD-7640A 8X 12.7 IDE slotload DVDRW

Look under Removable Storage. Is this the laptop you have?  http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/xps-m1530/drivers

Did you replaced the original drive with this MATSHITA BD-RE UJ-225S?

Maybe a cleaning of the drive will help get over the Power Calibration problem. Other than that maybe a new drive.

Also try all the available write speeds.

Dell did have Matshita drives in XPS laptops, just did not provide firmware for them. Hence I was looking for firmware elsewhere.

So, if my firmware is Q310 then do I need to get the firmware that ImgBurn recommends (Q113)?

Yes, cleaning seems to be the ONLY course of action I can take apart from replacing drive.

On the same laptop, I was able to write to the same DVD using an external DVD drive.

Thanks,

You can try to cross-flash to the Q113 but that requires some reading and following the instructions. Beware that this could brick your drive if things go wrong.

Your drive is MATSHITA BD-RE UJ-225S and the other drive is MATSHITABD-MLT UJ-225S.

I tried to burn files to DVD and that worked using ImgBurn. So, the issue is burning images (iso etc) to DVD.

So, will first try and use Lens Cleaner DVD. If that does not work then firmware flash. If firmware flash could assist in this then perhaps I'll do some more research and get exact steps or find someone who knows what they are doing to assist me.

Thanks

It doesn't matter what you burn, files or images, for the program and drive it's just data, all 0 and 1.

The problem is that after a while the drive get worn or maybe don't know the new media and the burn get hit or miss.

If it get worned the only chance is to replace it. With the new media sometimes the firmware update will help.

I'm sorry, I can't assist you with the procedure to do the cross-flash. You need to search for help in other places that deals with this stuff.

Hello,

I don't know if it is the drive or the software. Was able to burn the same iso to DVD using Windows Disc Image Burner. And ImgBurn keeps failing.

Do not know why that is. Is there some setting that needs to be tweaked? I did select "Default Settings" but do not know if this is a case of coincidental hit and miss.

The Power Calibration Area Error is down to the drive as it isn't able to callibrate the laser to write on that disc.

What speed did Windows Disc Image Burner burned the disc? Did you tried all available speeds? Try the higher speeds first.

Posted

How do I find out what speed did Windows Disc Image burn the disk on? It did not provide any such information on UI. Is there a log somewhere?

Posted

It seams Windows Disc Image Burner default to burn at max speed and don't offer a setting for write speed if you right click an image and chose Burn disc image. http://www.howtogeek.com/80094/how-to-burn-an-iso-image-in-windows-7/

But if you select the image in Windows Explorer and start the burn from the top menu Burn button you have the option to set the write speed. http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/burn-cd-dvd-windows-7-tutorial/

I don't know if it write and save a log somewhere.

The other two options to play around with are 'perform opc before write' and the 'write type'. They're pretty much the only ones that can make your drive behave differently. Otherwise, software has very little to do with the actual burn.
