Hi.

I tried to write slightly less than 25 GB to a BD-R (TDK, 4x, 135min, 25GB). I did this already many times before, but never ended up in such a "disaster". I trashed 3 media. The write process either started and stopped somewhere between 46% and 62% (never at the same place), or it didn't start at all. A file image (.iso) works fine!

Before I keep on going wasting expensive media, I prefer to ask here what could possibly be wrong.

Please help ... :)

Your drive reported a 'write error' as it tried to burn the disc.

Try dropping the write speed to 4x rather than using max speed (10x).

Failing that, try some discs with a different MID.

Is PHILIP-R04-000 the MID ID?
Seems to be Philipps manufactored media sold by TDK?
Right?

One of the Google hits for Power Calibration Area Error was to update the firmware, which I did now (from PL14 to PL17). After that, I only had one of these lines i.s.o. 20:

...
W 08:20:56 Failed to Write Sectors 0 - 31 - Reason: Power Calibration Area Error
W 08:20:56 Retrying (1 of 20)...
...

Another hint was to clean the lens. Is this really a possible reason for the error rather than a desperate attempt after nothing works?

Does a burn speed reduction also affect the calibration or only the burn process itself?

4x burn worked! No calibration errors anymore. Thanks!

Thanks,

Hardly anyone actually manufactures their own media anymore.  Philips making TDK media is not impossible as TDK makes Verbatim's inkjet BD-RE DL.  Anyway, yes that is the Media ID/MID.

I don't understand something you said.  You said it's failing to burn yet an .ISO file works fine.  What is it you're burning then in ImgBurn if not an ISO file?

Also, if you're going to use one over the other, don't use the CMC media.  CMC makes the worst optical media out there.

Now, you seem to indicate you had no problems before and it suddenly pops up out of the clear blue.  Since you're getting the same errors on the Philips and CMC media, it seems more likely to me that your drive is the problem.  It probably needs replacing.  How long have you had it?

I checked ... the drive writes DVDs and CDs without any problem. Only the BD-Rs create problems. Is this possible?

Besides this ... does a burn speed reduction also affect the calibration, or only the burn process itself?

Thanks,

A drive that needs replacing can write all other media just fine but fail on one particular type.  I've encountered most errors where DVD-R and DVD+RW were still fine but DVD+R DL were always failing after working before.  I've also had a BD drive that failed on BD-RE only but all other media were fine.

As for the burn speed and calibration, I'm afraid I don't know enough about calibration errors to make a comment.

That answers my question!

Many thanks!
