Lately whenever I've tried to burn a DVD, it'll get to the 2nd title and then bring up this error message. I never use to get this before. I am using Memorex DVDs. Could that have something to do with it? I've used Memorex DVD-Rs before with no problems so I don't get why it's giving me issues now. If I burn 1 title, it works fine so I don't understand what's going on. It can't be that it's too large cause DVD Flick would have read 100% and it didn't. If you need to see my error log, here it is:

Well, you shouldn't be using Memorex CMC media.  They're junk.  However, that can't be your issue now because you had no problems with them before.  You should use Taiyo Yuden, if you can find them, or Verbatim DataLife Plus.  Notice I said DataLife Plus and NOT just Verbatim.  Verbatim you find in a brick and mortar store or online that isn't DataLife Plus will be CMC.

How long have you been burning this drive?  Given how you've just started having this problem out of the clear blue, I lean more towards the drive having gone tits up.  However, when you say you burn more than one title and it doesn't work but burning one title does work, is a little odd.  When you say burning more than 1 title, what exactly do you mean?  That you're using more than 1 AVI, etc. type of file in DVD Flick to convert to DVD Video?

However, I think your issue may be with your hard drive, after going over the log a second time.  You're getting a CRC error on your C:\ drive file being read in.  It's failing to read the file from the hard drive.  This particular CRC error appears to be coming from your PC's hard drive, not from the DVD+R you're burning.  Or whatever C:\ happens to be, which is generally, by default, the Windows partition.

Run a scan on C:\ for hard disk errors.  Try and rule out that possibility first.

I fail to see how that can be at all.  The log says the file couldn't be read from C:\.  Unless the file failed to read because it couldn't be read first from the DVD.  Still, why would the log say it can't read from C:\ if the problem is on a DVD?

It isn't fixed, your hdd is dying.

Run chkdsk on it asap and scan for bad blocks. You may need to replace it before it dies and you lose everything on it.

Yeah, your issue with errors while burning DVD's may have gone away, but the actual issue still is probably there.  Why the issues went away simply because you switched DVD media manufacturers escapes me because they aren't related.

Wrong. I burned the same 3 titles I got the error message on and it worked just fine this time. Burned another 3 titles overnight with no errors. With the other brand of DVD-R, I was getting the same error every time. I've checked websites where people have asked about this same problem and some people said it could be the brand of DVD-R that's causing it. I wasn't getting this error message until I started using the Memorex brand so it's beginning to make a lot of sense.

I had already done that. In fact, I ran chkdsk before I even came here to ask about the problem. While it did come up with a couple of errors that it fixed, the same error message still appeared when I tried to burn a DVD.

Oh well if you've checked websites, you must know more about where the errors reported by my program are coming from than I do.

(yes, that was sarcasm)

We're just trying to help you.

E 09:56:45 Failed to read file: 'C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\My Documents\dvd\dvd\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_1.VOB'
E 09:56:46 Reason: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

The OS reported an error trying to read the file on your hdd. It 110% has absolutely nothing to do with your optical discs.

That's not to say your choice in media won't cause issues elsewhere, it's just that specific error was not caused by them. The two are totally unrelated.

If anybody reads that error and blames the media you're using, they have probably have no business offering support in the first place.

The only other possible issue it could be if it's not a dying HDD is something is interfering with the disc read of that file.  Like an antivirus program or some other program had locked the file.

Posted

So you're saying it's just a big coincidence that I started getting the error message the moment I started using Memorex DVD-Rs and it went away when I switched to Maxell DVD-Rs.

Posted

I'd also be looking at something interfering with the read of that file (be it antivirus or HDD on it's last legs), as the lines below indicate issues with being able to read enough of the files in fast enough to keep the memory buffers full... The question then is would ImgBurn give the "Waiting for hard disk activity to reach threshold level" warning if the issue was to do with trying to do re-reads, or is that soely triggered by excessing disk activity/thrashing... if the latter, something else is/was running amok on your system. If the former, you'll want to ran chkdsk from the command line with the "/B" (for bad sector check) and "/R" (for repair) flags, and be prepared to be without the computer for a couple of hours, as since it's the C: drive you need to scan, Windows will need to reboot and run the chkdsk as part of pre-boot so no other software can interfere.

I'm saying they're not related.  That's all.

It's not possible that the hdd was having a hard time sending the file to the DVD cause it's a crap brand? I burned another DVD overnight last night and still didn't get the error. With the Memorex brand, I ran 5 or 6 disks and the error came up every time so it can't be a random thing. You can say they're not related but there's too many coincidences that say otherwise.

No, it's not possible.

The program reads the data from the hdd into its internal buffer in your machine's RAM. That's the bit that was failing. Nothing to do with your optical drive or the media in it at all.

If you've just got a bad sector or two on your drive, you aren't going to run into the same problem until you try and read from something that's occupying that sector.

Now I don't know how big your hdd is, but consider the following....

There are 1,073,741,824 bytes in 1GiB.

Given there are 512 bytes per sector on an older hdd (which I assume yours is), that's around 2.1 million sectors per GiB.

So there's a good chance you won't always read from that bad sector unless you don't touch (overwrite, delete, defrag etc) the file using it. The drive may also have managed to recover it now if it's been overwritten again or reallocated it elsewhere.

The DVD writing program automatically deletes previously written .vob files every time I start up a new project so it couldn't have fixed itself by deleting the file if it kept giving me the error several times. Plus, I would still be getting the error with the Maxell DVDs since I didn't deleted, overwrite, or defrag anything. I don't know. As long as I'm not getting the error anymore, I'm happy with it and I consider the problem solved.
