Can't believe you've got such problems with lg's. Mine have been going strong for years and still burn as if new. Even my old gh22.

 

 

I think the years part is the factor.  I believe LG, like Pioneer, have been gradually declining in quality.  For instance, years ago, I had 2 LG BD's and they lasted a year before they needed replacing.  Then, I got one last year that needed replacing after 5 months.  And now this one after a month.

 

 

With Pioneer, my first Pioneer actually still works, except for an issue where the Eject button doesn't always work the first time you press it.  It does work on the second.  That one is like 3 years old, but hasn't seen much use after its first year.  My 2nd one of the same model is still going after almost 2 years, just the same issue with the eject button.  The 3rd one I got stopped writing BD-R's after 7 months.  The fourth one I got was rotten right out of the box, failing to write to its first 2 BD-R's.

Well my bg16 (v1) isn't exactly new either, still going strong. Burning every disc I throw at it without issues and perfect playback.

That was my point.  :)  That the older stuff may be better than the stuff they're making now.  It seems to be a pattern with Pioneer drives now.

 

 

And that BD-R failing now may have been a fluke.  I just burned one without a problem.  Could have been 2 bad media in a row.  I'll have to see if the pattern repeats with any kind of fluidity.  So, the month thing may or may not be an issue.

I think I have to take back my last comments about my new LG needing replacing after a month.  :blush2:  I've written several BD-R, including several near to the edge, which I thought was the problem before, without incident since the 2 back to back failures that did write near to the edge.

Do you have the ability to verify the disc in another drive... just to triple check things?!

 

Unfortunately, Sony Optiarc have stopped making drives.

 

I threw the coaster away, and I don't really want to make another one (Verbatim DLs are expensive).

 

It's something wrong with the image. Reauthoring it with DVD Shrink (and no compression) fixed it. There would always be errors at the same locations. I haven't had any problems burning other images.

 

This is a good topic though, what's a good drive available new today? What do you all use?

As for what drives I use, I use only BD burners and I think you're after DVD burner suggestions.  I haven't bought a DVD burner since like 2013, so I don't know what's still good in that field.  Last time I bought a DVD only burner, it was a LiteOn.  However, LiteOn's have an issue where they can randomly add pauses to the DVD playback of DVD+R DL's that aren't layer changes.

No. I opened the mds/iso in DVD Shrink.

 

I've had this problem with IMGBurn before. Some images would burn with verify errors. The solution is usually to mount the image as a virtual drive and use IMGBurn to read it, then burn that image. That usually fixes it.

 

In this case, that didn't work, but using DVD Shrink did. DVD Shrink opened the image just fine, and I didn't alter anything. Compression was turned off and nothing was removed or rearranged. The resulting image is almost identical to the original, yet burns fine unlike the original.

 

It's probably some inconsequential header data or something that IMGBurn is burning incorrectly then fails to verify.

Any burner recommendations anyway? DVD only burners seem to have universally poor quality these days. The HL-DT-ST I have is working fine (so far) but every so often burns a coaster and sounds like a jet engine taking off. Sometimes it verifies fine, but the resulting DVD skips anyway. This is rare though.

 

I was going through some old CD-Rs the other day. I had a Sony CD burner in 2002 until it physically broke ~2009. Every single one of those CD-Rs burned by the Sony read fine. I'd like that kind of quality.

Well, whatever works, go with it.  It shouldn't matter a tinker's cuss, but it did here.

 

 

As for getting something as good as Sony quality, you were lucky.  Starting in 2002, Sony started making 95% junk.  They used to make quality products, but they went :horse: in 2002 to today.  And you definitely won't get an optical burner that will last for 7 years now.  Sony used to make quality DVD burners with the Optiarc and DRU models, the first dual format burners.

 

 

As for my BD burners, I have 2 of them because no one burner does everything right.  I have an LG WH16NS40 only because it's the one that writes correctly to Ritek 8x DVD+RW.  Its drawbacks are that it writes at BD-R SL and DL formatted as giant floppies at half the speed of the Pioneer BD I have.  And it does not write properly to BD-RE DL, even the Verbatim quality ones.  They fail more often than succeed on Verify at the layer change.  However, it handles Verbatim BD-R and BD-RE SL fine.

 

 

I would normally have recommended Pioneer's BDR-209M, but Pioneer has really gone downhill in recent years.  The last firmware update they released borked writing to Ritek 8x DVD+RW.  They will always fail Verify until fully formatted with the previous firmware revision or in another drive that is not that Pioneer revision.  I don't know if this affects any other rewritable DVD types.  Normally, Pioneer used to only have 1 flaw.  After a few months, the eject button doesn't always work the first time you press it.  Or issue an eject command to the drive.  A second one does work.  This affected the first 2 models of the drive I had.  My first one still works well save for that button.  And that's been about 2 to 3 years.  My 2nd one I'm still using, despite the eject issue.  The 3rd one needed replacing after 7 months because it stopped writing Verbatim BD-R correctly.  The 4th one I had immediately went back to Amazon.com because right of the box, it failed writing all the Verbatim BD-R I threw at it.

 

 

So, if you're going to go for the Pioneer, you will need to download the 2nd to the last firmware revision, extract the actual firmware from it, and a tool to downgrade the firmware if it's the latest.  And there's the eject button issue you will probably encounter.  And you'd better test all media you're going to throw at it to make sure it works when you get it.  Otherwise, it works great!  :rolleyes:

Well, after about 2 months of burning the new HL-DT-ST drive is cranking out Verbatim DVD-Rs that skip, though they verify fine.

 

Could it be the player? DVD-Rs burned by my laptop drive (Matushita UJ-8A8) also skip, but that drive is 6 years old.

I'd try playing these discs with software player on a PC.  Especially someone else's PC as your drives could be the problem.  If they skip back on a PC, which is generally more forgiving than a standalone DVD player, then your drive is probably turning out bad discs.

 

 

You can also just try testing these discs on someone else's standalone DVD player.  If it skips on theirs, you could be more likely to blame your PC burner as turning out bad discs.  However, it could be just a case where the other person's DVD player doesn't like that media.  So, you can't be really for sure.

I burned a Verbatim DL DVD in my friend's LG BD drive and it plays perfectly, so it must be my drive (again). Both DLs and SLs skip with my drive. I only use Verbatims.

 

The LG DVD writer I got in May is 94 days old i.e. 4 days out of warranty. Should I pick up another LG, probably a BD one this time, or perhaps buy a used drive?

Well, setting IMGBurn to DAO on my drive fixes the skipping, though incremental worked fine before. The good burn on my friend's BD drive was incremental also. Go figure.

Scratch that, all the following burns skip.

 

New drive time. Maybe I'll get the same model as my friend, HL-DT-ST UH10LS20. It's 7 years old and burns perfect DVDs.

This is unrelated but I dug out a CD-R burned by my Sony CDRW drive from 2002 and ran Nero Discspeed on it.

 

Not bad for a cheap CD-R burned 15 years ago. It feels like you can't buy a drive of this quality anymore, or CDs are easier to burn than DVD/BR.

CD burners were more reliable because they only did 3 functions: write CD-R, write CD-RW, and read CD's.  Only 1 format, with 2 different flavors.  Once DVD burners were introduced, you had to add in read and write capabilities for DVD-R and DVD-RAM.  Eventually DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW were added.  Then, they added DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL, making it even more complicated.  Then BD burners added yet another layer of things it did with BD-R, BD-RE, BD-R DL, and BD-RE DL.  Then, they added BD-R XL and BD-RE XL.  And then they added M-Disc.  As you add layers of complexity to what a device can do, the likelihood of it failing one of those components increases by a factor of levels.

 

 

Media also used to be more reliable because the crap manufacturers hadn't gotten into the business yet.  Memorex used to make a great CD-RW when the media was new.  Then, CMC came along, and Memorex sold out their CD-RW to them.

I just picked up some Verbatim DVD+R DLs and this is happening on all of them.

I exchanged them for another 20-pack spindle just in case. These are Verbatim DVD+R DL AZO discs.

This happened on the last spindle too. Always fails in the same place. I bought this drive new 6 days ago.

Does the Asus do the same when you turn the 'Perform OPC Before Write' option back off?

 

I don't know how unlucky you can be with drives/discs, but something isn't right there.

This is what happens on my drives with these brand new MKM-003-00 discs. Second spindle (I took the first one back to the store). These are 20 packs.

 

Matsushita UJ-8A8 Notebook - Fails OPC. If OPC is skipped, L0 can't be set.

 

ASUS DRW-24B3ST - Burns but fails on verify.

 

I also reconnected the three month old LG GH24NSC0 - fails on verify.

Next thing I'll do is burn without OPC on the ASUS, but my hopes are low...

I bought a third spindle from another store just to see what would happen. Same results. All these failed burns had one thing in common, the image.

 

I burned another image on the ASUS and it came out fine.

 

The Matsushita just refuses to burn these discs at all.

 

The question now is what's wrong with the image...

There shouldn't be anything 'wrong' with it, data is just data. The drive shouldn't know or care about what it's burning - unless you've managed to find some *very* special combo of 1's and 0's that always cause a problem.

 

It also doesn't appear to be failing at the same point.

 

Can your Asus do disc quality scans in the likes of cdspeed / dvdinfopro / opti drive control / kprobe?

You're right, the spot that verify fails on is different. :/

 

Continuing to think about the image, I mounted it as a virtual drive, "ripped" it again, then burned. Burned great on the first try on the ASUS. 95 score on discspeed. This is after 5 failed verify coasters from the original image.

 

In fact, I tried burning this exact image on the first page of this thread, and it also failed. I forgot about that.

 

I've had this happen before with IMGBurn. Verify consistently fails until the image is mounted in a virtual drive then ripped again.

 

I'm forgetting the Matsushita drive completely for now, because it refuses to burn these DVD+R DLs. It's 6 years old, so its burning capacity must be on the way out.

 

I've burned a few other DL images without issues. I'm not sure why this happens, because as you say data is data. Is there any further information I can provide?
