HalcyonDaze Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 (edited) Im trying to rip my disks of Legends of Dragoon (for better performance in ePSXe), on Windows10. Everything I read says ImgBurn is the goto program for this. But I cannot get it to complete the rip. If I select the Disk to Image file operation, it gives me no errors but completes in 1 second and leaves a 0kb .bin and a 1kb .cue. If I try the Create Image from Files and point it at the disk, I get ~59% through before I get a error that says it failed to read a file "Reason: Incorrect Function". I havent been able to find anything online to explain this. Any idea what is going wrong? Im given to understand that ImgBurn doesnt support the Subchannel side of things for actual burning, but does for ripping from the disk (which is all I need). EDIT: Ill post the log shortly, sorry it was not included. Edited January 17, 2019 by HalcyonDaze

LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 Please go into Read mode and copy + paste everything from the disc info box on the right when that disc is in the drive.

dbminter Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 Some PS1 games cannot be read by ImgBurn and some combinations of drives. When I encounter one such disc, I use Alcohol 120% Free to read those to image files. It always worked for PS1 games that wouldn't for me in ImgBurn. If LUK can't suss this out, it's something you may want to try. Granted, I've never encountered errors like the ones you posted before in such instances.

Nope, that's everything (see picture). 42 minutes ago, dbminter said: Some PS1 games cannot be read by ImgBurn and some combinations of drives. I can load ImgBurn on an old laptop, see if the problem stems from the usb disk drive. Ill report back. EDIT: OK, so the culprit is definitely the cheap USB drive I was using. I loaded ImgBurn on an old laptop running windows7 (with an internal drive) and everything worked fine (iso ripped and runs in ePSXe). To test I then plugged the USB drive into the laptop and got the same issue as seen before where it couldnt apparently figure out the disk. The usb drive was able to read the disks weel enough for ePSXe, but it appears not for the ripping process. So the moral of the story: Dont buy cheap hardware off amazon. That solves my problem. Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it. Let me know if you want any more tests or log information or some such, if it will help you in any way. Edited January 18, 2019 by HalcyonDaze
dbminter Posted January 18, 2019 Posted January 18, 2019 Is this GCC-4244N USB drive the slim model LG, slim model HP, or the half height IBM one? If it's one of the slim models, that might explain it. Slim models are really bad at, well, everything. Plus, LG drives, in my experience, are not the best readers to begin with.

Worse, it's a slim "Rioddas" brand from china. Here's the link to amazon where I bought it, was literally the cheapest one I could find. I really should have known better, but I was tired of having to disconnect one of my hard drives to free up a SATA port on the occasions that I needed a disk.
dbminter Posted January 18, 2019 Posted January 18, 2019 Yeah, you really can't trust the reliability of slim models. And with a lot of modern towers sans half height bays, you need to buy internal half height drives and put them in USB enclosures to get any kind of quality results.
