Burn100 Posted February 12 Posted February 12 (edited) They have a capacity of 4.7 GB. But both Windows Explorer and IMGBurn says 1.31 GB of 1.31 GB free. I can read disks fine. I tried with Verbatim and YDD and the result is the same. dbminter Posted February 12 Posted February 12 If you've tried both Verbatim and another brand of DVD-R, then the issue is either one with your burner or some obscure Windows error. First off, try changing the I/O Interface in ImgBurn. Tools --> Settings --> I/O --> Page 1 --> Interface. Try changing to a different interface. It shouldn't be necessary, but I would recommend closing and reopening ImgBurn between changing I/O Interfaces. See if any of those different Interfaces help. Barring that not working, I'd try getting a new DVD burner, preferably a different make, model, and manufacturer.
Burn100 Posted March 1 Author Posted March 1 The original drive failed. It made huge noise then completely refused to do anything other then open and, accept a disc and then make terrifying noise. I managed to get another one, hp CDDVDW TS-H653T ATA Device, also from Samsung, and it initially reported the correct size, 4.38 GB at the store and I even managed to burn a DVD and it copied files just fine, yesterday night however, I have the same issue again. I am not certain what is causing it, since it was fine when I installed it in my pc on Wednesday. I tried with Verbatim and YD, same result. I also used a Live Lununtu USB on the first one, and it too reported the same 1.31 GB size. I found another thread from a decade and a half ago here with the same issue, also from Samsung, but there is nothing there that suggests a solution. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/samsung-dvdwbd-drive-reports-blank-dvd-r-as-13gb/59e8d6d5-83f7-462b-aa30-4d74ce89f36e So it turns out that I can not change interface. I tried to, but it tells me that I have to download them. When I went to the downloads option, it tells me that they are not necessary for Windows 10. Thanks for helping. Anything else I could try?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Is that drive still being manufactured or are you buying used ones? Any particular reason to buy that model? They all work, so go for something different.
Burn100 Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 Internal Drives are not available here. They stopped importing it because not many use them. This is the only store that I found that had it and the manufacturing date says September 2020. It seems they sell laptop's internal drive with a SATA to USB as a the new thing since people use a caddy to add an extra SSD in that space. In short, research failure on my part. As for why I got the same thing again, they replaced the original when I claimed warranty. What I find weird is why it reads 1.3GB. Why that specifically? Thanks
dbminter Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Oh, you'll drive yourself crazy trying to find out why computers do the arcane black magic things they do!
Burn100 Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 I think I will see if I can get one of those external ones. Question, if my dvds have a lot of scratches, will trying to read them damage the player?
dbminter Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Technically, turning on an external player can "damage" it. Simply the act of passing electrical current from a completely powered off device can do that. It doesn't happen often, but it can do it, particularly as a device gets older and more usage. To more precisely answer your question, not "damage" it, per se. It can just cause the laser to wear out sooner because it requires more work of the laser to read scratched discs. The good news is most scratches can't be recovered from. It depends on the depth, length, number, and location of the scratches. However, a good rule of thumb is if the device keeps attempting to read scratches and doesn't error out/stop and you're getting very low read rates, I tend to stop the read operation after 30 minutes.
