RedDoor Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 In a bit of a panic as I need to get some DVD's to a client ASAP. 1) I've used ImgBurn for over a year with a BenQ burner. That burner developed mechanical problems with the door so I went out today and got a new burner - an LG GSA-H22N that was highly rated at CDFreaks.com. There doesn't seem to be an updated firmware from LG - guess the drive is that new? 2) I'm using MCC-004 Verbatim discs and converting DVD+R to DVD-ROM. Any ideas? For what its worth, I get a similar error from Nero - seems to burn OK, but the fails to verify. Hoping its something simple !! Thanks, I 16:33:58 ImgBurn Version 1.2.0.0 started! dontasciime Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 just to point out your using an older version of ImgBurn. Have you got that lg as master and on an 80 wire ide cable ? (try another cable) also try with just a 40 wire ide cable try unistalling the ide controller rebooting and let the lg get picked up by windows again. you could also try this firmware, this would be at your own risk though, make sure there is no disc in tray and it is closed. 101
polopony Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Dont set the write speed to max either quality is off after 12X I'd set it to 8X you'll get great burns at that speed
RedDoor Posted February 12, 2007 Author Posted February 12, 2007 I did just download the newest ImgBurn. I have the DVD set as master, but am just using the same cable that I was using with the BenQ. How would I know if 40 or 80 wire and why would I need a different one from the BenQ? Can you let me know how to uninstall the ide controller? Through Device Manager I assume, but . . . Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
RedDoor Posted February 12, 2007 Author Posted February 12, 2007 I note that setting it to "max" it actually maxed out at 9.1 and was in the 8x range most of the time. Will changing it to 8x make that much difference? Seems like I read somewhere that setting it too slow (2x etc.) could cause problems as well. Thanks for the reply. I will try again at 8x.
dontasciime Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 the cable from one drive manufacturer should be fine, however you may have a faulty cable, so try another as that crc dma error has been linked to faulty cables. make sure its also not hanging out also the firmware i posted if you updated to 1.01 there is no way back to 1.00 just to let you know. or you could run this reset
RedDoor Posted February 12, 2007 Author Posted February 12, 2007 I uninstalled and re-booted. I'm going to have to wait until the morning to open up the computer. I did get a ribbon cable with the new burner. I'll go ahead and install it and see what's what. I do appreciate the help. I'll let you know how it turns out. Right now, I have to go watch the season premier of "Lost" !! Thanks again.
RedDoor Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) Still no luck. I have 1) Replaced ribbon cable with one supplied with drive 2) Updated ImgBurn 3) Reduced burn speed from Max to 8X 4) Uninstalled and re-booted as suggested. As I said, I'm getting similar results with Nero, so I don't think it is an ImgBurn problem per se, but I am getting a large collection of coasters and no client discs! I've really got to get this sorted somehow. Thx for any help. I 10:33:30 ImgBurn Version 2.1.0.0 started! lmao2k Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 80 pin cable has thinner cables bonded together as opposed to the thicker 40 pin 40 pin 80 pin Have you tried testing it on a different channel (primary instead of secondary)?
RedDoor Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 Re: cable, I used the one the manufacturer supplied. Based on what you said, I guess it is the thinner 80 pin cable and it was a thicker 40 pin that I took out. Re: motherboard, I can check. But, I had been using the same computer, ImgBurn, same discs, etc for about a year without any real probelms. I don't think this can be it, but is there anyway the iso file can be "corrupted". No real reason to think that, except that I am using an iso file about a year old. It would be a lot of work to re-create the iso from the original photos which is why I saved the iso file. Anyway, thanks for the input. Do you think the motherboard is important. It is a two year old Dell Dimension 8400 with a Pentium 4 2.8 chip.
RedDoor Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 Here is the motherboard info Board: Dell Inc. 0J3492 Serial Number: ..CN481114BJ0144. Bus Clock: 800 megahertz BIOS: Dell Inc. A05 03/16/2005 Mean anything to you? Also, I have the DVD burner as master at the end of the cable and my CD burner as slave in the "middle" of the cable. I rarely use the cd burner anymore - should I disconnect it and see what happens?
dontasciime Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 If it were me, I would scan the hard drive for errors that you have the ISO stored on i would also turn off compression on the drive if its on. I would then after scanning, burn the ISO again then try and verify, if you have any other programs running like anydvd i would stop it first as this can interfere with the verify. It's hard to diagnose when your not in front of something that is going wrong, there are lots of things i would be trying, however i have lots of motherboards to test in etc. Which I/O are you using in ImgBurn ?
dontasciime Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 so you have hard drive as master on primary ide and is there nothing else connected to that cable ? Then you say you have dvd writer connected as master on secondary ide, pull the cd writer off that cable for time being. also what does windows say about the dma in use for your hard drives and writer
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Your issue isn't image related or disc related (at least not yet!). The log clearly shows it's a DMA issue of some sorts. Something is corrupting the data as it's read from the drive then passed through the I/O subsystem. As you hinted and dontasciime agreed with, remove the cd burner so the dvd one is the only thing on the cable - and it's at the end of the cable. Board one end, drive at the other.
RedDoor Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 I'll dump the cd so the dvd burner is the only thing on that cable. Re-create a new ISO and try to burn it. Hard drive is fine, no errors or problems in any other respect, etc. Not sure what you mean by : Which I/O are you using in ImgBurn ? I really appreciate your suggestions. It is a real puzzler to me why things went south on me all of a sudden. Thanks for the help.

Hi Lightning, thanks for your help. I'm going to drop the cd burner now. Yes, board one end of cable, drive at the other. I'd be delighted if it turns out I don't have to re-create the ISO. Thanks

dontasciime Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 i prt scrn then open mspaint and paste then upload image via imageshack you primary will be the hard drive, what is the secondary one
dontasciime Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 after searching around a bit yesterday and today, your not the only one with this problem, seems to be controller related. I think you said your system was a dell, so at a guess everything that was in your dell at sale when you got it was set up by dell. Have you got the writer you took out to see if it was set as cable select. Pity you don't have an external enclosure you could put drive in and use usb2 to connect to mobo.
RedDoor Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 i prt scrn then open mspaint and paste then upload image via imageshack you primary will be the hard drive, what is the secondary one OK! Maybe we are getting to it now. I'll work on getting a screen grab but for now under IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers, I have an Ultra ATA storage controller a SATA AHCI controller, and Primary IDE controller also I note that above that I have DVD/CD-ROM drives, when I open that all I have listed is CD-ROM, even though I have disconnected it. Having said all that, I don't really have a clue- I'm just parroting back what I see.
RedDoor Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) Edited-- Would an external USB2.0 dvd enclosure bypass these DMA issues? If so, that might be the best/quickest route to take. I've got to get some discs burned and out to clients very soon. Edited February 13, 2007 by RedDoor
dontasciime Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 using usb2 would possible fix this, depending on the chipset in the enclosure, prolific 3507 should be a good choice, maybe even the older 2506/2507, stay clear of ali chipsets
RedDoor Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 using usb2 would possible fix this, depending on the chipset in the enclosure, prolific 3507 should be a good choice, maybe even the older 2506/2507, stay clear of ali chipsets OK, I'm going to give that a try. I'll run into town this evening and see what I can pick up. This is actually the third dvd burner I've had in the PC. The previous two were BenQ1625's. One developed a mechanical fault in the load tray. The other one would have a disc loaded but no program would recognzie it as loaded. Having said that, I've burned hundreds of DVD's with the BenQ's. I can't think of anything I changed - certainly no new hardware. In "turning the clock back" - I took out the LG and re-installed the old cable and each of the two BenQ's. Their original faults still remained - load tray and not recognizing the disk was loaded. So, here's the plan. I'll try to pick up either/or an external USB enclosure with the chipsets you mentioned or another BenQ1625 (even though two have failed me they at least worked for a time). Any other ideas? Thanks for holding my hand on this!
