Failing to Verify

Hello, Folks,

I'm new & I'm having troubles. Trying to burn a 7.8GB ISO onto a Memorex DVD-R DL 2.4X

The drive is an NEC 3550, capable of DVD-R DL.

I'm writing atthe slowest speed, & all seems top go welkl until verify. Then, it gives a warning:

W 11:27:46 Waiting for device to become ready...

The main window status bar says:

Device Not Ready (Medium Not Present)

How can I rectify this & get back to work?

Thanks for any advice!

PS- Here is my log:

I 10:44:48 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started!

I 10:44:48 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 2)

I 10:44:48 Total Physical Memory: 654,832 KB - Available: 420,172 KB

I 10:44:49 Initialising SPTI...

I 10:44:49 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...

I 10:44:49 Found 1 DVD

how long do you wait and does the drawer close after ejecting

btw your using dvd+

There is also a new firmware http://www.de.nec.de./software/2343_FW_ND-3550A_106win.zip

The media you have is not that good as well.

Also the slowest speed was 2.4 its rated speed.

sorry ignore first question, if it is saying device not present then your drive does not like that media, get some verbatim dual layer and that should change

Make sure to get the + dual layer and try to get the ones that only do 2.4x

I've just updated the firmware to 1.07

Is there some reason you reccomend1.06?

If this doesn't work, I'll try getting some new media.

Oh, and yes, I'm waiting a long time for the drive to recognize & begin to verify. Eventually, it comes back with the message: W 11:27:46 Waiting for device to become ready...

When I go back to verify this disc I burned, it says "Disc is Empty"

But when I go back to 'Write' mode, it says "Disc is not Empty"

If when it cycles the tray, the drive continues to say it's not ready, it'll just sit there until it is - polling it every second and asking 'are you read yet?'.

It's VERY odd that you could (if I understand what you're saying correctly) cancel it and the drive magically starts to recognise the disc - without you having to eject it again or anything.

If that's the case, there must be another program or driver on your system that's messing around with the drive's return codes and is feeding ImgBurn false information.

Tried again after flashing the firmware to 1.07

Results were much the same, with slight difference.

After writing, it DID acknowledge the disc to verify, but had consistent errors when attempting to verify> I copied down the error messages:

I may have described my experience poorly. Allow me to clarify:

After the verify has failed, and it has given up trying, I've put the program into 'Verify' mode in hopes of 'manually' verifying the disc which, by all indications, DID burn successfully. However, when I try this, the program claims the disc is empty. "Well, then," says I, "If it's empty, I'll try burning it again." So I put it back into 'Write' mode. It looks at the disc and says "Media is not Empty."

Hope that's clearer.

Basically, it all seems to go well until the verify stage. I've written several discs here & can't boot them or explore them.

Might I have mischecked some option for DVD-R DL drives/media? I tried to set the options for this particular drive, & it said "Successful" but the options don't appear to change in the dialog.

Thanks again for insights-

Okay, I zipped out & returned the two *used* boxes of Memorex & picked up some Verbatin DVD+R DL 8X 8.5GB discs.

Trying to get a good burn now. Will post as soon as I get some results...

Thanks you guys for your advice thus far!

Possibly means the drive needs cleaning or a new one is on the cards.

Congrats in getting arefund oin used media - many have trouble with that. However, the better disks are the MKM-001 (rated 2.4x).
