What am I doing wrong here?

Tried twice, thinking the TYs were at fault. no luck.

Just joined, can anyone suggest a tweak here to change my luck?

Appreciate in advance... thanks from Colorado.

It should just work - which obviously it's not.

So either your media is duff (fake batch perhaps?) or the drive is on it's way out.

My PX-716A died after year so you've done quite well to keep a PX-712A for this long.

Thanks,

I checked your FAQ. Then checked the DMA - Primary IDE is set correctly to DMA for both devices but Secondary is set to PIO mode in Device 1 (DVD burner) and DMA in Device 2 (CD burner). Should I unintall the Secondary IDE?

I've had this Plextor for 3 years. It's just started doing this recently.. last 8 weeks.. I burn 2X every other day.

Again many thanks here,

cheers

All your drives should be on DMA, so yeah go ahead and uninstall the controller - NOT just the channel.

again, I'm new to this but don't I need a controller? Do I uninstall and replace with a new one?

I 09:09:25 Write Speed: MAX

I 09:16:07 Write Speed: MAX

I 09:42:17 Write Speed: MAX

try changing the write speed to 8x instead of max as well and if that fails, chance one at 4x

SOLVED!!!

I uninstalled, rebooted, rechecked and verified both channels DMA. Then changed the write speed to 8x and now it works like a champ again..

YOU GUYS ROCK!!

Come next payday I'm shooting off a donation to the cause. Thanks again for walking this newbie through the actions without making me out to be a complete idiot. Cheers.

To be honest, I wouldn't count your chickens just yet.

The errors you were getting are not consistent with what you 'think' has fixed it.

The discs were only ever going to burn at 8x, that's all the drive supports.

I 09:42:17 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: TYG02) (Speeds: 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x)

and I bet dontasciime only suggested DMA stuff because of your low write rates - but it errored out so early into the burn that they wouldn't have had time to reach a decent level.

Still, as you say the secondary devices had dropped back to PIO (or had always been on it?), it's certainly done your system no harm to fix that bit.

Neither would I.

I had noticed the errors were straight from the off on the 2nd bit of log

W 09:17:06 Failed to Write Sectors 7392 - 7423 - No Seek Complete
but still thought at least mention UDMA

Get hold of a Cd Cleaner or save up for a new drive or replace media as you may have a duff batch.

Hopefully you only had a few duff ones and everything will work from now on.

Well I've burned 3 more since the adjustments with no problem, thank you. But I'll keep your warnings in mind if it starts acting up again. It looks like Allsop makes a popular cleaner and Plextor has an updated burner available for less than US$90 over here .... I've had great luck with my TY silvers - maybe 20 duffs out of 1000 over 3 years. I get them from rima.com - great service and price here in the US. Thanks again for the input. Colorado
