First I select burn image file to disc, choose the file and it supposedly will start burning, but it's constantly waiting in the Que list and doesn't burn. Near the bottom of this software window, in red it reads Device Not Ready (No Reference Position Found).

*I checked my device Manager. (Hardware Tab of system properties) checked for any unknown devices not working, my device was properly listed under CD/DVD and says no problems found in the driver properties for my DVD device.

I have burned before with Magic Disc and other software, Nero, power iso, etc.

I have never been able to burn with this software. Maybe it's possible it's clashing with other burning software? I do not have any other processes running, no background processes by any burning software that would be accessing the disc.

I even tried disabling my virtual drives, thinking they were problematic to this drive, but nothing so far.

Are you sure you have a DVD burner? Can you post a log from ImgBurn? It's in Help -> ImgBurn Logs.

Open ImgBurn, switch to Write mode, insert one of the previously burned discs, copy the Information shown on ImgBurn's window and paste here. The No Reference Position Found usually happens when your drive doesn't recognize/support the media you're trying to use (e.g. brand new 16x blank on an old burner).

Actually I found out, it's not reading any DVD's. My DVDRW drive make is Liteon, model LH-16W1P. It's actually on the same IDE line as my hard drive. I am thinking this is causing interruption. Even though this setup works with a different drive, it's an HP CDRW, model C4495. I double checked to make sure one is set to master and the other slave. I have tried switching the master and slave and no difference. Cable Select does not boot. The Liteon DVD firmware is up to date. I will soon get a new Hard Disk to fit my motherboard upgrade to SATA2, but until then I have to daisy chain my HD and cd drive on one IDE cable. There is only one on this mobo, but 6 SATA2 inputs. I need to upgrade my hard drive, and throw this one in my modded Xbox!! IDE is junk.

My motherboard has an IDE Controller to prevent interrupt, but it seems to not work with a DVDRW drive, only CDRW.

Posted

Does anybody understand why a hard drive and a cd burner works fine on the same IDE cable, but a DVD burner and a HD reads audio and cd rom discs, but does not read DVD or burned discs. It works fine on a seperate IDE (different computer)

Posted

So same disc in the same drive works fine in 1 pc but not in another?

It's an odd message ('No Reference Position Found') for the drive/driver to be reporting back to ImgBurn if that really is the case.

Are there any updates available for your motherboard - bios / ide controller drivers etc?

Which chipset does that motherboard use?

Is the PSU ok and able to supply the drive with enough power?

Posted

I actually have all my mobo drivers updated via "Driver Magician"

The PSU is strong enough definitely, I don't have very many peripherals. I even tried disabling the service "ATAPI", because I read in a Nero Burning ROM forum that service was useless. That didn't work. I also tried changing the Transfer Mode from Ultra DMA 2 to PIO only.

Storage Controller JMicron JMB36X Controller

The DVD device is not attached to this controller? Usually creates weird results if it is.

:)

Posted (edited)

Well I consider myself kind of smart with computers and "Lightning UK!" & "Cynthia" confused me about this talk about the Controller. I'm not real sure what that is really, honest. But um anyway I did download Lightning UK!'s FTP .39 JMicron driver... and that didn't help this problem. I noticed it did add software for RAID systems on the Start Menu, but I don't have a Redundant Array Setup...

I was doing some thinking, pulled up some information about the Hard Drive and DVD drive, more specifically the Transfer Modes... I'm thinking maybe they have to be on the same Transfer Mode...

So here is what modes they support:

WD1200BB hard drive supported transfer mode:

PIO Mode 4

DMA Mode 2

Ultra DMA Mode 4

LH-16W1P supports these transfer modes:

100MB/s (Mode 5 Ultra ATA)

66.6MB/s (Mode 4 Ultra ATA)

33.3 MB/s (Mode 2 Ultra ATA)

16.6 MB/s (Mode 4 PIO)

16.6 MB/s (Mode 2 multi-word DMA)

Now knowing what transfer modes these devices support, and they run on the same bus....

My theory is the transfer rates should be on the same level. Maybe I should set the BIOS configuration for both devices' Transfer Modes to DMA Mode 2 since that is the only one they are compatible?

Is this way of thinking incorrect? I don't know.

In conclusion: Somewhere down the line, there's some kind of interrupt going on. Where my drive works properly on a seperate bus, not on the same as the hard drive running Windows. I tried turning the ATAPI service both started and disabled, neither makes a difference. Tried changing Transfer Modes, no difference.

But the current setup I have where the HD and the DVD drive is on the same IDE bus, the drive will read all CD-ROMs fine, music cds, but not any burned discs whether it's movie, data, music... And also no DVD's. It normally will read all discs.

Any outside ideas? I'm starting to think that it's impossible for HD running Windows & my specific DVD drive is impossible to run properly on the same bus.

I heard in forums that my HD jumper should be set to Master, and DVD set to Slave. I have tested both switching master and slave, and it doesn't matter. They work the same as long as they are set different than the other, and also: the location of the plug you insert doesn't make a difference. It's all communicable. So my HD set to Save or Master would work, as long as the other device on the IDE bus was set to the opposite. It doesn't matter which direction the IDE cable is attached, the way my case is setup with the HD real low, my IDE is technically backwards, with MASTER (on cable) is connected to the motherboard, SLAVE is connected to my DVD and MOBO is connected to my HD... this doesn't matter, just to throw that out there in case you didn't know. I've done it many times before, it's just a transversal wire that connects devices, and contains no mechanical parts inside if you take on apart! :)

Well i don't get this - I was using my burner fine yesterday - just gone to burn another file this am with same disc and I am now getting this message.

Now nothing has changed since yesterday - the pc has not be rebooted and no new/different software has been installed.

the only thing i noticed is, using the 'Smart Burn' app that is for liteon burners - it now sees my d/l disc as cd's with a max burn rate of 48????

I get the same message on Img Burn whether it be a dvd or d/l dvd

this is what the drive thinks it has in it -

Drive Type = DVD Super AllWrite

Disc Type = UNKNOWN

Material = Cyanine

Lead In = 00:00:00

Lead Out = 00:00:00

Nominal Capacity = -0.29MB

Manufacturer Maybe = (null)

SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 48X (Write)

this disc's has burnt fine before - help pls.

K... all fixed for now - although have only burnt 1 at moment - but it is burning

I added in a ide burner and moved the sata burner to another port - the ide worked for dvd 1st time - so eliminated software/os issues.

uninstalled burner causing issues - moved to another sata port and it is now working again.

is the drive on the way out?? about 3 weeks agao it started auto closing after you open it, is this a sign that drives are their on way out?

Posted

Both should be playing nice with each other since both support UltraDMA Mode 4.

By the way, you still haven't posted the info I asked on post #4 :)

Like i said, the drive isn't recognizing any DVD movies, blank DVDs, or previously burned DVDs. It does not recognize burned audio discs but does read manufactured CDs and CD-ROMs.

Sounds like the drive is dying if it can't even read a commercial DVD. They "go" first on DVDs and then CDs. You could try cleaning it.

Just got finished testing difference discs with the drive in another machine just now, and yeah same problem so something is mechanically wrong with this hardware somewhere down the line... Should I pitch it or.... any servicable parts worth it?

What are some good DVDRW drives nowadays??

Posted

Pitch. No serviceable parts. I got a Samsung 203B earlier this year and it is fantastic.

As a last resort, I took it apart and cleaned the lens and still has same issue. Are all Liteon products junk or did I just happen to get a weakly manufactured product? I didn't damage it as far as I know.

I have three Lite-On's and I like them. :)

Not to mention the tens (hundreds?) of thousands Sony DVD recorders which are re-badged Lite-ons :thumbup:
