DVD ISO burn failure.

Greetings!

I have an HP-300c external DVD writer, connected via IEEE1394 (Firewire), and have successfully burned movies, cd's, data DVDs, and so forth. All good.

The HP software doesn't include the ability to burn ISO images, so after minimal googling I downloaded the ImgBurn program as various sites recommended it.

Successfully burned an ISO of a data CD (Fedore Core CD's actually). Good!

However, I am unable to burn the Fedore DVD ISO, which is 2.6gb in size.

The DVD writer is found as to be expected, ImgBurn finds the blank media, and upon clicking the "burn" button it spins the DVD up, the "buffer" fills, then after a while the DVD stops spinning and things just seem to sit there. The machine isn't locked up as the mouse works and I can open/close other applications, but I figured after ImgBurn sitting there an hour at 0% something isn't quite right.

I did update the 300c firmware as per the HP website, however HP wasn't more useful than that.

The PC runs XP Pro SP2, has a gig of ram, and plenty of hard drive space.

Might anyone have a suggestion or two?

I'm not sure if this issue is specific to ImgBurn or not... as I later tried magicISO and got the exact same result.

Look in the log or in the status bar, what does the program say it's doing?

'Writing LeadIn...' ?

That means your drive STILL thinks it's busy attempting to burn to the media.

If it's sitting there all day long doing nothing, it probably means your drive doesn't like the media. Look for a firmware update for it or try some different discs (with a different dye).

I did the firmwar upgrade. I had both official "HP-r" media (two, which are now coasters) and huge box (500 minus the four coasters!) of generic media.

I'll give another brand a try, and post the results. It just seems weird because I've used both media to burn the output of Adobe's Premiere Pro (I do video editing).

For "giggles" I tried it on Linux, and on my wife's PC (XP Pro also) and got exactly the same reasults. I'll try new media before I replace it.

Can you post the ImgBurn log with the Media ID in it ? Then we can see what make the dye is on the discs....

After each attempt, if I remove and flip the DVD blank over I can see a darker ring that wasn't there to start with, near the hub. I presume the DVD burner "put" something there.
