loucypher Posted July 9, 2014 Share Posted July 9, 2014 A couple of days ago I did put in an erased DVD-RW disc, and started to write an ISO image, but ImgBurn asked me to erase it (full erase, slow): I was a bit surprised, but I acknowledged, and everythign went ok. Today I had to copy another ISO image to a brand new (still wrapped) DVD+RW disc, and then again it asked me to do a full erase before! Now... is that so common to happen? Posted July 10, 2014 Share Posted July 10, 2014 New DVD+RW discs aren't usually preformatted and the drive will error out if you try to issue a 'write' command without having formatted it first. I don't know what the problem was with the DVD-RW, the program would never ask to do a full erase on one of those. It's a quick erase (if the drive claims it isn't blank/empty) or nothing. I've noticed that some programs seem to apparently to do weird things in writing. ImgBurn wants to fully erase them after they've been used. I haven't had that happen in a while so I don't know what program it was that did that for me, but I have encountered it before. It makes no sense, actually, that it should but I have had it happen. I rarely use DVD-RW/+RW (had more experience with CD, but that's another matter), so I didn't remember about having to pre-format +RW. Right now I'm rewriting the +RW, and it didn't ask for reformat this time, fine. That said, sorry about the -RW: actually it's another +RW, my mistake. Then it could have happen I erased it long time ago, putting it back to non-formatted state, here's why it had to be formatted again.
