  1. Start, Control Panel, Programs, Default Programs, Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  2. Download the Duplex secure installer package. It will tell you the version and whether u need an update or not.
  3. I was using windows Vista before upgrading to 7. Before someone thinks I will start to bash: it was running smoothly (I only chose to upgrade since I got my licensed Windows 7 copy anyway). I will tell you the most common causes that causes Vista to crawl: 1. Outdated or buggy drivers (Most common cause for systems sluggishness and BSODs): Try to find the latest drivers for your hardware profile. Microsoft do have ONLY DEFAULT drivers for hardware but any customizations is the job of your PC or hardware vendor. Check their respective Web Resources. 2. Unnecessary running services: Remember when I told you to disable windows search indexing service. Well there are many other services that might be running in the background and slowing your computer down. you have to find them and disable them or use some optimizing utility to do it for you. 3. GARBAGE: yeah you heard me, junk files, obsolete programs, cluttered registry all of those can bottleneck your system making it run sluggishly. There are many freeware and shareware cleanup and optimizing utilities you can use if you look. If you wish to know my recommendation PM me and I shall give them to you. 4. Last but not the least and one I hope you don't have is a FAULTY hardware like a Faulty RAM chip (common cause I see around) or HDD. Run diagnostics tests (like Windows Memory diagnostic test for RAM) on your RAM, HDD and see if it comes up with any errors. IF not then its one of the above. Hope it Helps Regards Paladin77
  4. Well I guess we are on the right track. Try Defragmenting your HDD (especially your system drive). Also consider removing the SPTD drive (i.e DT or alchol 120%) there are better alternatives than those. Also try to stop services that are eating up your system resources: 1. Click start, Type "MSCONFIG" 2. Click on the Services tab 3. Check Hide all Microsoft services radio. 4. Disable services that u do not need (note some services are beneficial like Antivirus for example).
  5. Well it simply makes searching for stuff at your HDD faster by creating indices so if you have a large HDD say 500+ GB full of videos photos and stuff like that it would come in handy when you dunno where you put your stuff. Otherwise its safe to keep it turned off (it even speeds up windows by not keeping HDD and CPU in use).
  6. Also Try Disabling the Windows Vista indexing service on your HDD. It was found to cause numerous problems while burning. 1. Click on Start button, then select Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools, and double click on Services applet.Alternatively, simply type “Services” (without quotes) in Start Search box. 2. If User Account Control asks for permission, click Continue. 3. Locate an service named Windows Search. Right click on Windows Search, and then select Properties on contextual menu. 4. Click on Stop button to stop the indexing service immediately. 5. On the Startup Type dropdown box, select Disabled. 6. Click on OK button.
  7. ok Problem Solved. I hate messing around with Firmwares rom packs but it was necessary since MSI guys are quite lazy regarding drivers (hell I got my gfx driver for w7 5 days ago). 11. Ok so I was burning a Windows Vista SP1 and the strangest thing happened. Imgburn identified my media type as MC-00 (which is non existant) and identified supported burn speeds as 2.4 and 4X. What is more strange that on Verify it was correctly identified as MCC-004. This happened after a firmware update from 1.01 to 1.02 from the MSI website (vendor of my laptop). Question is should I be worried or is it just glitch? Here is the log: I 11:17:18 ImgBurn Version 2.5.0.0 started! 12. Try connecting the LG drive via USB and disconnect other hardware connected via USB ports then reboot your computer with your drive connected.
  13. No it isn't Evil (Satan won't come up don't worry) its pretty much the same pushing the button or Gently pushing the drive tray (its written in your drive or xbox manual) Pushing the tray gently does pretty much what button does activates motor to pull back the tray. And as Cynthia said its always safer to use software interface to do that (I personally don't look at my desktop drive at all except for putting the disc in the tray).
  14. OK this has dragged long enough. First Let me say thank you LUK for fixing what isn't really an Imgburn problem (which I will explain why). Conqueror I will tell you why your log is empty even though you used a shutdown utility or w/e. First lets get to the roots of this problem: you're probably using an "optimize and tweak" utilities to speed up your boot up and shutdown, This lowers the process kill sequence deployed by windows to kill all processes to safely shutdown the pc (Default is 120 seconds i.e if all your programs are shutdown in under 5 minutes computer will shutdown; once it hits the 5 minute mark, Windows kills it and shuts down sort of like end process of task manager to make the analogy close to you). Now as for why your log appeared empty even with a 3rd party shutdown program and Imgburn having enough time to dump a log of what apparently is a failed burned is that Imgburn displays a dialogue box that needs user interaction (Either Retry or Cancel or OK or Cancel). Your disc has failed lets say with w/e error (we will never know) Imgburn displayed an error message requiring your attention (but since you were in dreamland it was impossible). The entire program kept displaying this box till shutdown sequence was sent and process was killed before Imgburn could have any chance to dump any log of the failed burn. As for that log you posted, it is probably the log of another instance (Window) of Imgburn that was open which you probably shutdown before you go to sleep (you were awake at 7:50 weren't you?). That is the only plausible explanation (besides someone else messing with your PC while you were sleeping ) Of course you could have saved yourself the entire fiasco if you haven't lowered the process kill sequence as for prompts & warnings read the guides to see how to disable prompts/warning.
  15. Here is the link for the most comprehensive correlation between "Brand" name and Media ID or MID or manufacturer's ID. Also useful on knowing good discs from crap ones. Although its like a universal fact that Verbatims (singapore ones) and Taiyo Yuden discs (Made in Japan and isn't made elsewhere if it says it is its counterfeit) are the best discs out there in both quality and compatibility with drives old and new
  16. Ok I think I found the solution: D/C all other USB devices like mice, hubs xbox wireless gaming receiver external HDD before burning and it should work (lol yeah I am a USB abuser too many devices via USB )
  17. WTF THIS repairer GUY IS TALKING OUT OF HIS A$$. A CD caught a virus and that caused the drive to lock on the CD?! I have seen alot of BS in my career in IT from the so called computer "experts" and "repairers" or w/e the hell you call them. Do u realise how stupid what he said is? virus infecting CD affecting its face?! It is possible to create a milacious code to lock the drive and stop it from opening but for a virus to infect a disc or drive during burning, what kind of logic is that? If you ask me dude you got ripped off; for $60 you can buy yourself a whole new drive instead of listening to illogical crap. Also bear in mind the virus that can lock the drive infects windows and not the drive itself as the drive is controlled by a firmware which any Kindergarten kid would tell you a firmware is a program that is written to the ROM (read only memory) chip of the drive. So for a virus to infect it it has to actually flash itself in the ROM break the firmware encryption devised by the manufacturer to protect its product from theft or unauthorized modding and then lock the drive which is entirely stupid. Geez the amount of computer expert wannabes these days.
  18. Thnx LUK I guess having an 18X or 22X USB 2.0 drive isn't smartest thing to do. I have followed the AWS guide here and set the writing speed at 8X for this media.
  19. Well its not really A problem and am not going to lose sleep over it since the DVD played more than fine in the DVD player. I just noticed that the 16X discs I try to burn on my External LG USB drive tend to be burned erratically at a slower speed than maximum (which is set as AWS) in the middle of the burn, with the device buffers getting consumed quicker than drive can write, then the drive responds to this by slowing down to 8X (which seems to be a stable speed). The Media is as u see most decent I can lay my hands on (oh how I wish for YUDEN discs ), and the drive has the latest firmware SE02 (I seldom burn DVDs since I have over 1TB of space). I just wanted to know if there is something I am missing: a setting that is specific for USB drives (this issue doesn't happen with the crappier laptop slim drive). or something I am doing wrong. ; //****************************************\\ ; ImgBurn Version 2.5.0.0 - Log ; Sunday, 27 September 2009, 22:32:24 ; \\****************************************// ; ; I 22:14:03 ImgBurn Version 2.5.0.0 started! 20. Update Windows Vista with SP1 (Service Pack 1) then all updates then Service Pack 2 (you cannot stick SP2 directly its not a cumulative update like windows XP). Then clean your drive with a cleaning disc. Regards
  21. Very Very Good point Night Raven, HDDs has always been the bottleneck of evolution of system performance and as u said 10k rpms drive as well as questionable SSD hasn't added much to the scene. Defragmantation is a good tip ESPECIALLY if user still uses the good ole' FAT32 filing system in the drive. Also as to the driver's updating Night Raven, I agree with you in the point that if its not broken don't fix it. That remarks and tip were directed mostly to those who use legacy systems. Newer Microsoft OSs have better driver compatibilities and installs the correct and latest drivers for you. So Generally here is a tip: Cleanup and maintain your system regularly. Defragment your HDD (especially system partition). Also if you're using Vista or later and do not search alot inside your HDD much disable the HDD indexing service. Susan Welcome to the Forum: You can find the your Drive type from the device manager and then check for firmware updates www.firmwarehq.com. Alternatively an easier way to automate the search is to use imgburn to do it for you. 1. Start imgburn 2. Choose a mode that shows your drive e.g Read mode (create image files from disc) or Write mode (write image file to disc). 3. Right click on your drive which should be displayed over there. 4. Click check for firmware update. 5. Press Ok on the prompt that appears after you checked what firmware you have (you should have active internet connection). 6. Check in the Website if there is in fact a firmware update or not (sometimes it displays same firmware). 7. If there is a firmware update. Download it and save it on your HDD. 8. Remove any discs from the drive close any running programs before you run the update. 9. Run the update and WAIT till its over (Warning: DO NOT INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS or your your drive will be bricked). 10. Once Done Reboot your computer. Note: Laptop burners rarely have firmware updates. Also check the HP site if there is firmware update for your Compaq laptop. My personal suggestion is using laptop burners for movie or game or quality burns is futile as they suck. Get yourself an external USB drive or an internal IDE drive with a USB enclosure to ensure yourself a quality burn. Regards, Paladin77
  22. @ Mods Feel Free to move this topic the appropriate Section if necessary I've been hanging around for a while now reading all sorts of issues faced by many of the users of this great tool and wondering why is this happening only to them despite of recommending this software to many many of my friends co workers and haven't received a single complaint regarding what it can do. I searched around the forums and read many of the solutions posted by the apt and capable staff of this forum and will try to summarize and add a few tips of my own hoping it would abolish all the issues others are facing. So lets start Shall we 1. Use Decent High quality Media: I can personally guarantee that 90% of your issues will disappear if you push a few more bucks from your piggy banks and invest in better quality media, trust me on this it will save you the hassle, frustration and your money by having less coasters. So Where and how to get Decent Media? Refer to the Media section here to find the best media available to you. Also check the Media ID (our cool imgburn natively supports this feature; you can find Media ID through program interface so you don't need to download extra software to know your Media ID) and refer to the following article: http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm to avoid counterfeited and find best quality media by Media ID. Remember Its a combined drive/Media combination. So If you use an old drive it might not be compatible with the disc you're using even if its considered decent and hence I personally recommend (and I think LUK agrees with me) Verbatims (Made in Singapore) which are are best media out there as they support most drives old and new. 2. Use your Drive/Media to your advantage: I know that in our modern times we like to buy things plug it in and use it instantly (the working out of the box experience) and I can't fault you on that. But won't it be better if you invest a few minutes of your time to check the specs of your drive and media to see what it can or cannot do?! The reason I am saying this because I've seen many strange practices when burning discs that leads to coasters, errors and other undesired outcomes which are blamed either on discs or imgburn so let me put those OLD WIVES' tales to rest: SLOWER BURNING IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER: Many of us don't mind waiting for around 55 minutes while burning a DVD at 1X thinking it would result in a quality in burn when in fact they are torturing the drive by forcing it to slow down from its manufacturer designed speeds as well as forcing the disc to write at a speed that is almost considered obsolete now hence giving rise to many writing errors that may render the disc unusable and resulting in a coaster. I mean for the love of.... you get yourself a brand new drive that can write at 22X for instance and you use it to write a disc at 1X. You don't see me going at 30 mph in my aunt's Ferrari 456 GT; instead I get myself a court date for excessive speeding and reckless endangerment The newer drives and newer discs can write flawlessly at faster speeds; so as long as you're using a decent drive and media you should have no problems. The ONLY time I would recommend you using a slower speed is if you're using JUNK media and I certainly don't recommend 1X as a speed. Only reduce the writing speed to HALF max. speed supported by the media e.g if you have an 8X max DVD junk media set writing speed on 4X. Trying to write at a speed NOT supported by Media or Drive: What?! Don't blame me or LUK or imgburn if the manufacturer of your drive has set a minimum write speed for your drive or your media. Imgburn is merely a software that feeds the drive with a set of commands to achieve a successful burn. It can only work within the limitations specified by the device manufacturer. I mean if you want different speed support from your drive I am pretty sure that can be achieved via drive firmware not imgburn. Same concept goes for Media. Buy a Media that can support your desired speed. Can never write on Maximum speed All through: Believe it or not the Drive cannot start writing at the maximum designated speed. Again blame physics for that (you have to accelerate first to reach any speed). If you believe your drive is slow despite of decent media and recent firmware then you should enable your DMA: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread...;threadid=44808 and try not to use your computer extensively while burning to provide more memory for burning. 3. Update your Drive Firmware: This is quite self explanatory. If you buy yourself a decent Drive, your manufacturer isn't going to leave you to dry in the wind. He will release firmware updates to support more media types, more speeds and fix bugs in previous versions. Be sure to check your drive periodically for firmware updates (again our lovely imgburn has a shortcut to firmwarehq.com where you can find firmware updates). Needless to say download only the firmware for your drive, do not interrupt the update process, update the drive with no disc in the drive, reboot ONLY after the update is successful. 4. Other Tips: Those are other few minor tips I recommend for an optimal burning experience: Update your device drivers, BIOS, enable DMA, OS updates and patches etc: Well although Imgburn is more than capable to work flawlessly on legacy systems as old as windows 95 if there is any degradation or failure in the operation of imgburn most probably it is due to generalized degradation in system performance. Avoid using the computer extensively while burning: Although we like the luxury of having dual, quad and soon hexacore core rigs giving us the ability to multitask I still recommend waiting for a few minutes and giving imgburn enough memory to burn successfully. Please use the Verify Option: I mean its there for a reason, with a few more minutes after the burn the verify option checks the disc entirely against the image that was written. Saves you the hassle of manual testing or expecting unpleasant surprises due to error-ed burn. Remove or Replace or DISABLE interfering programs: There are many programs that will interfere with imgburn and other authoring tools' operation. Imgburn displays a warning for you if one of those are detected e.g SPTD driver used by Alcohol 120% and Daemon tools made by duplex secure is known to cause detrimental drop in drive performance in SOME systems. So if you have any of those I recommend disabling them before commencing a burn project or better yet find a better alternative e.g Virtual CloneDrive by ElaborateBytes and Slysoft is a great alternative freeware to Daemon tools that has no interfering effect. Update Imgburn: Although quite obvious but from what I've seen many seem to miss checking the main page. Update your burning program for extra features, bug fixes, performance fixes and the list goes on for the reasons why you should update imgburn. Experiment with Media: In addition to getting better and decent Media experiment with each of those HQ media to see which will work best for your drive. Once you've found it stick with it. I hope this whole or part of this post was helpful to you to achieve a carefree successful burning. Other Members and staff please feel free to add more and more tips Any comments or Criticisms are welcomed Paladin77
  23. Did u check your sound card driver? Is your sound card working? As I said check the link in my post for other fixes. Cynthia: Good find but as u can see this update has been released since 2005 so it should be included as part of the service packs (service packs in windows XP are cumulative unlike Windows Vista). Unless they aren't installed correctly (SPs that is) don't think it will make a difference. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480
  24. I agree with mmalves in this. Its really a combination of Media and burner. So best bet is testing media against your drive. What makes Verbs highest in quality is that it is argued to be accepted by most drives old or new.
  25. There seems to be an issue with your sound card or sound card driver. Try disabling the sounds from the settings of Imgburn if error message goes away then u should check your sound card driver or sound card hardware for integrity. If the those drivers and hardware are fine you might want to close other programs using the sound card. A simple google search returned this for a possible solution: http://forum.teamspeak.com/showthread.php?t=32 Regards.
