  1. I've had the same results with RITEK-D01-01 DL discs, failure to verify. The odd one will play well on stand alone players, but I have strong doubts to their widespread compatability and longevity. They've long been considered unreliable DL media, and recent personal testing has shown me that they have not improved. Like Corny says, better media is your best bet.

  2. Some of this has been posted on another site, on the advice of a friend posted it here also.

I've been doing some personal DL media testing the last while, more specifically non-Verbatim. The reason for that being obviously that Verbatims work very well, known fact. The first testers were of the Ritek nature, with similar results to most everyone else. Failure to verify, etc. Next on the burning block were Fuji DL's, with the following results.

    Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):

    Disc ID: RICOHJPN-D00-01

    Book Type: DVD-ROM

    Part Version: 1

    Disc Size: 120mm

    Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified

    Number of Layers: 2

Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP)

    Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit

    Track Density: 0.74 um/track

First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608

Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,578,943

Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2,197,887

Burned with a NEC3520, at 2.4X, 4X was an option though.

I've had very good luck with these so far, and fully intend to pick up more. All things being equal (ie price) I'd still give Verb's the nod, but only because of their widespread success rate, not because I've had them work any better. If anyone has some other test's they'd like performed on these, let me know, if possible I'll conduct them.

  3. The ultimate answer IMO, but highly unlikely, would be a truely functional commercial skip feature. Most new "hour" long shows (for example Smallville) are 39-42 minutes in length. Thats 18-21 minutes of commercials per hour! That's why I don't watch much broadcasted TV, I wait for the DVD's to save myself the agony of all that propaganda.

  4. I would guess that it's all old stock now when it comes to VHS blanks, or at least very close to the end. Apparently Wal-Mart will no longer be stocking VHS in 2006. Most video rental shops here don't bring in any VHS at all anymore, and are selling off they're old stock. You can pick up a stand alone DVD recorder for about $150Can. now, and the selection of new VCR's for sale is shrinking almost daily. They had a good run though, 20+ years of strong sales and rentals, DVD's won't be dominant that long.

  5. I bot 2 spindles of Maxell 8X -R's on the weekend. One spindles media code was RITEKG05, good enough, but the other was CMCMAGAE1 ! I'm in the process of making a lot of noise with Maxell. After a phone call I can mail them off for an exchange, but I'm waiting for an explanation, if I don't get a satisfactory answer, they will be going on my Shite List. Unfortunate that a decent company has to stoop to selling shit products.

Welcome to my SHIT LIST Maxell!

Maxell is of the opinion that CMCMag media is of a HQ nature  and they will only replace defective media, not unburned ones. I couldn't be bothered to harse about with shite discs, so I now have 50 nice gold Maxell coasters, and I will no longer buy squat fuck from them.

  7. Why not go for a 4550 / 4551?

I haven't been able to find it for sale yet in Canada, should be readily available apparently within a month. LabelFlash looks a lot more interesting than Lightscribe, but a colour printed disc (inkjet) is still nicer IMO.

  8. Use whichever program you like to create an ISO image, be it Shrink, Elby's CloneDVD etc. Then use ImgBurn to burn it on a DVD! Guide for the latter in the guides section. It's a rather exhaustive and complete guide, you shouldn't have any trouble ;)

  9. That sounds possibly like a setting or connection problem on your player. Do bot discs play w/ colour? If you have your component cables mixed up it will play in b/w, also a bad s-video will do the same. Also having your DVD player set to progressive scan on a non-progressive TV will give you that result with some DVD players, such as Harmon Kardon.

*edit* missed your post Cornholio, bdeyes refer to his post first.

  10. No problem doccbst, hi/fi & home theatre have been my hobby & money pit for a long time. Hopefully LUK will correct me if I'm wrong re. what I've said earlier and now, but IMO I.B. will burn any audio content correctly that you wish to put on a DVD disc, as long as it's authored correctly using whichever program you choose.
