What did you end up with? A Pioneer?
-
Does anyone know of any brands of standalone DVD players that will play this media? It seems rather silly to create a video disc that will only play on a computer. Should I just go buy an external DVD burner that supports booktyping if I choose to continue on this path?
I would be more inclined to go with the external burner, this will give you much more flexibility than the stand alone player. Just my opinion.

It just doesn't get any better than that, but give it time, I'm sure it will.

Oh, ok, but CMC's are not the media to test with.

DVD-R (Disc ID: CMC MAG. AE1) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 8x)
Here is a major part of your problems, you are using media that's not fit to be used as target practice.
Speeds of 2.4x in -R media is unheard of.
please get some decent media, verbs or yudens, only then you can be sure of drive problems.

Disc ID: RICOHJPN-R03-04
I dare say the movie starts playing after a minute?
This is quite good quality media, the problem you're having is "protection" related.
I'm afraid we realy can't help you with that, sorry.

Pain_Man,
Simplest way to prove they are full of shit is to turn off your HT for a couple of burns and see what happens.
I personaly think it's a load of bullshit.

See if this helps to start with.

And Newbie? I had something like 400 posts on another incarnation of this forum!Don't feel too bad, I had over 6000 posts, does it realy matter?

I just assumed that burning to a DL disc the pionneers auto booktyped to DVD-ROM.
Correct.

Can you post the whole log please?

Happy birthday boss.

I tried ImgBurn 1.1.0.0 with the same results. Thanks for all your help btw Ken.
You're welcome.
The only other thing that I can think of, other than the fact that the drive is just not capable of burning DL media, is to check your DMA settings, please read the link I've posted, go to post #2.

Let us know how it goes.

I dare say this is part of your problem, for testing purposes install an earlier version of ImgBurn, and see how that goes, keep your burn speed at 2.4X tho.

Can you throw some machine specks at us please?

Are the buffers nice and steady while burning the DL media?
Actually the Device buffer is all over the place.
Ok, check this out to start of with.
It's a windows caching problem.Seems windows doesn't cache me reading in the 4gb file if I read in 64k chunks. As I switched to 256k (to hopefully speed things up!), it now caches everything and eats all your memory.
This was reported lastweek sometime and fixed almost immediately.
Get 1.2.1.0 when I release it and you'll be fine.
Cheers for reporting it though.

Supported Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 8x
Yes, I could see that in the log, and that's what worries me, this media is only rated at 2.4X yet your drive is reporting 4X and 8X, do you know what your media is rated at?
Sometimes the drive will return higher speeds than the media rating, however this is most unusual for DL media.

@phatboy,
Are the buffers nice and steady while burning the DL media?

@phatboy,
Here are the specks for the same media that you're using from a supported drive.
Note the speeds supported.

@flawless115,
That's ok mate, I was just trying to point out that it was a 1:1 copy, there was no disrespect meant to you.

I would say you have drive/media compatability issues.
Does it write DVD5's ok?

DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-001-00) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 8x)I 20:01:08 Write Speed: MAX
I would be very tempted to slow your burn speed to 4X max, 8X on DL is very "heavy duty".
Is the media you're using actualy rated at 8X?

And don't forget to set the "book type" to DVD ROM on the +DL media.
