i would swap out the cd drive

if it is a normal drive you may as well swap it out for a new dvd writer, its pretty easy to do.
price? that will depend on your region i suppose, are you in USA/Europe or? if we know the region we can link to sites

unfortunately you can't write to a dvd-rom you will need a writer, they arent very expensive and may give you more luck trying to read the disc.
can't hurt to try imgburn at home , i haven't had nero on any of my pc's for a long time , imgburn never fails my needs

you need a dvd burner to transfer them to full size dvd's.
if you have another drive on another pc maybe try reading it in that

you have to download an iso to get an iso, try downloading fedora.iso fx. or ubuntu.iso

you should verify to see if the disc can be read back

Once it becomes an ISO file you can not do anything with it.
