e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Never had a problem with Imgburn, good and stable program, does what it is supposed to quick and easy - so WHY WHY did I update to v.2.5.1.0 when my v2.5.0.0 was working so well!? First out two wrecked discs, one burnt OK but the disc had strange stripes along the tracks - an uneven burn or something the surface was the same before I put the disc in. It didn't verify, next disc stopped at about 90% so I uninstalled (also got rid of the irritating Ask-stuff that I mistakenly added when installing) and installed the v2.5.0.0 again - same error on the third as the second though... I also noticed bands in the burnt area, a few mm of the same color when held in front of a lamp, center area having a uniform color and then increasingly lighter bands ... So it's likely I have a bad batch of discs I guess - and there's not much to do but to try another one and another one... I ran the cleaning disc in it, and tried burning on a DVD-RW that I know there's nothing wrong with, I guess I'll be trying again. :-(
Cynthia Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Hej! Can you post a log of one of those burns with 2.5.1.0?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I didn't change a single line of the code that does the burn stuff between 2.5.0.0 and 2.5.1.0, so whatever the issue is, it's not due to you upgrading. In any case, the program just streams data to the drive. It has no real control over anything, that's down to the drive/firmware/media combo.
eSkRo Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 (edited) Make sure you include a copy of the program's log in your post. No log = Edited March 26, 2010 by eSkRo
e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 Sorry, I didn't save the log and I went through five discs that burned up to 90% before write error occured, all had increasingly lighter "bands" where they were written to. Sixth disc worked right away, no strange patterns on the disc, same looking surface on all the burnt area. So, I guess it's the discs, but thanks for the feedback, I'll see to it that I upgrade again then.

Cynthia Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 These are the supported speeds with that media (Speeds: 4x; 6x; 8x; 12x; 16x) Tried 8x?
e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 I lowered the speed to 2x the last burn to make sure it was not a speed problem, raising the speed when there's a possible problem rarely solves the problem, or does it? I'll try 8x next time then, but as there are visible bands on the burnt area I'm assuming it's a disc problem, hopefully not in the whole 25-pack. I wrote to the manufacturer and supplied the serial numbers of the faulty discs. We'll see if I get an answer...
e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 What are these dips I get every 0,5GB, seems to be the same on successful burns as well:

e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 (edited) Nice to know, about OPC, it's a test write and read in the lead-in - my log says OPC: No. Could you elaborate on what you mean. ;-) I have one of these: http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/products/dvddrivesdesktoppcs/ad7203a.html Weee - a successful write - in 4x, it feels like a lottery if it's going to work or not. Cynthia Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I lowered the speed to 2x the last burn to make sure it was not a speed problem, raising the speed when there's a possible problem rarely solves the problem, or does it? W 16:59:55 Write Speed Miscompare! - Wanted: 2 770 KB/s (2x), Got: 5 540 KB/s (4x) When you selected 2x, you still got the 4x write speed. Some burners are better to burn at a higher speed like 8x than the lowest one 4x.
mmalves Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 The burner pauses briefly during burning (i.e. the dips you see in the burn graph) to check if the burn quality is good and makes corrections if necessary. This is done by the drive/firmware and the software has no control over it. The OPC option in ImgBurn's settings asks for the OPC information before burning, and if this errors out it could indicate incompatibilty between your burner/firmware/media combination, but in practice it proved to be not that reliable, so that's why it's disabled by default. Notice though that this option doesn't affect the burner's internal OPC.
Cynthia Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 What are these dips I get every 0,5GB, seems to be the same on successful burns as well: Looks normal for a Nec/Optiarc writer. It "stops" the burning from time to time to check/calibrate the laser so it writes as good possible on the media. You also see that the buffer drops down to zero during that time. OPC shouldn't an issue to enable for that burner. You can find that setting in the Write tab in the Settings.
e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 (edited) But the log says OPC: No, and isn't it supposed to do that when writing the lead-in, once... Tried 8x, fail after 78%, same kind of bands in the written area. The successful write before it also has some of these bands of different color (it's very hard to get a good picture of it). Trying another 8x write with OPC on... Edited March 26, 2010 by e5frog
Cynthia Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 What's the name of the brand of those discs you are using? The setting OPC: Perform OPC before Write Performing Optimum Power Calibration (OPC ) is a special technique used in newer CD/DVD recordable drives to perform a test write and read in an area inside of the lead-in, in order to determine the best laser power for recording and to adjust to each recordable disc, which may vary slightly from different manufacturers, or for other reasons.
e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 Traxdata DVD-R 16x (made by Ritek) http://www.traxdata.com/printablemedia Never had a problem with them before I think this is my fifth 25-pack. Yeah I know, they're rather cheap, but nice large printable surface and again, never had a problem before. I¨'m thinking I've just gotten a bad batch. Or perhaps I have gotten good batches before and they're usually bad. ;-)
e5frog Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 Another crap disk, struggled for a long time at 85% and then failed... 8x. I guess I'll just run through it, take the faulty discs back to where I bought them and ask for a refund or a new pack (and try my luck again).
e5frog Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) Another four discs failed at 65-60%, I'm starting to suspect the burner giving up, and it's not even that old. Is there any way to check it? If I try burning a known good DVD-RW it works out OK every time. I bought the burner 2008-12-10 and have burnt maybe one disc a week, average. For how many discs is a burner supposed to last. It wasn't an expensive unit, cost about €30. Any recommendations if I want to get a new burner? Edited March 27, 2010 by e5frog

e5frog Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) So... another Optiarc, really? Looks like that one is a SATA-drive also, I need an ATA (or IDE, it says either or in the specs on different pages). Edited March 27, 2010 by e5frog
Cynthia Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 If I had been you I stayed with that burner you have and get discs from outside of Sweden instead. If you bought those Traxdata in Sweden you can get high quality Verbatims for less money including shipping costs and avoid feeding Mr Borg with tax money. If you bought a 50p Traxdata at Clas Ohlsson you paid 369 kr = 7:38 kr/disc Price abroad for a 50p Verbatim is 118:44 kr = 2:37 kr/disc If you place a small order you can add 90 kr in shipping costs. Still cheaper even if you just buy one 50p spindle.
e5frog Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) I like the all white printable surface on those and I usually pick up a 25-pack at the store, they cost 189SEK - delivery time is zero and it's not a lot of money, and as I've said before I never had a problem with them before. Do you have any good link to one of these abroad sellers? These seem affordable: http://se.wesellcd.dk/index.php?page=products&product_id=1494 273 SEK with shipping... with DHL, I imagine I have to pick them up at my closest DHL place - in the neighbor village... Shipping with Posten is another 50 SEK which makes it 323 SEK - 6,46 per disc... I guess it might be worth it however, since they are still considered the highest quality discs. I don't want to mess with a faulty DVD-burner though, even if it has life left - can the quality of the burns be trusted if it can't burn on lower quality discs? I was thinking about getting a Samsung SH-S222A... EDIT: Polkapig was 298 SEK, strange thing though is that on the English page they are called "full printable" and on the Swedish they're only called "printable". I'd hate to get those that have VERBATIM DVD-R printed in large shiny letters around the hub, but if you can trust the picture of the package (which I have learned you often can't) they are printable up to a few mm from the center.
