buggerlugs Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Hi I've come to post here about an issue I have using imgburn. I am in the process of converting bluray disks I've bought into ISO files. Some files I convert produce only an .iso file which is exactly what I want. A lot of times however imgburn also produces a .mds file(for no obviously apparent reason)which I dont want. I play my ISO files via win 7 Media center, blu ray get played via power dvd 9 (more or less) seamlessly within media center. With standard dvds I use clone dvd. To mount images i prefer to use daemon tools, but for some reason it will not work with disks that have a .iso file and a .mds file in the same folder. If I remove the .mds then the image mounts but i get an error saying the disk is in an unsupported format. I can use virtual clone drive to mount the .mds files and it works ok, but i have other issues with virtual clone drive. I've even mounted the .mds and tried to make an image of it via alternative software like AnyDVDHD and nero and those programs make a single iso but again, these iso files give the unsupported format error. Ultimately I would like imgburn to burn an iso file and only an iso file, but it seems I cant do it. I'd appreciate any help on this.
eSkRo Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 (edited) The MDS file type is primarily associated with 'Media Descriptor'. This file is used by several different programs. It generally is found with an .ISO CD image file and is the equivalent of what a .CUE file is to a .BIN image. IsoBuster can interpret these files directly. read wiki here --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MDS_file if ImgBurn produced a .mds file, thats cuz its the way it should be.... LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Created or not, the ISO doesn't change. Exactly which version of DT are you using? What problem do you have with Virtual CloneDrive?

What problem do you have with Virtual CloneDrive? Hi Why is it that if I use another program to create an ISO they never make .mds files? I can convert a blu ray with AnyDVD to an iso - no mds file, I can use clone DVD - no mds file. I can write an image with nero - no mds file. Imgburn is the ONLY piece of software I've used to date that creates these files. That wiki page says these files are optional - so can anyone tell me how I can create working iso files without these added files? I'm using the current version of daemon tools lite Edited April 3, 2010 by buggerlugs
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 MDS files have a very specific purpose. Those other programs don't know how to make them in the first place (their spec is not open source), but they sometimes use a *.DVD file instead. The *.DVD file contains the type of media, the layer break position (if any) and the names of the image file parts. VCD uses this info when mounting so it can emulate more accurately. The need for that *.DVD negated by the fact that Virtual CloneDrive tries to detect which media it should emulate by reading inside the image file, so they probably don't make them at all now. Within ImgBurn, you can turn off the MDS file creation via the settings. Tools -> Settings -> Read -> Create Layout File. By default, it makes them when there's a reason for it (hence why the value is called 'Auto') - i.e. because you need one if you want to mount the image and have it working in something. If these workarounds for DT are no longer required, I'll stop making the MDS for BD images when the option to create the layout files is set to 'Auto'. Just don't forget, making it (the MDS) or not making it, the ISO image is identical. So if you have problems even after you've deleted it, not creating them in the first place will not change that.
