SONY DVD RW DRU-800A

Specs from CDRInf

1) The first dvd burned ok, but received an error during verification, which I was able to ignore, and imgburn kept verifying in the background. I played the dvd back with PowerDVD, skipping to each chapter, and all seems fine. So this one isn't really a coaster, but that error worries me a bit. Burned on the DRU-710A Sorry--no log for this one.

2) The second dvd (of a different movie) was a coaster, burned on DRU-710A again. I received a write error (see log below). It was a MDS of a split ISO (split at 4GB with DVDD***er). [i split them so that they will fit as data on dvds in case DL doesn't work). The error: "Failed to write sectors 2495776 - 2795808 Write Error".

3) Tried it again for the same MDS file on the same drive. Wrote ok. Error during verification: "Failed to read sector 2503344 - Unrecovered Read Error". I played it back with PowerDVD, and playback froze at the 2h01 minute mark (the start of the 2nd layer perhaps?).

4) This time I got a single file MDS of the same movie (just in case file splitting was the issue), and tried burning on the DRU-800A. I received an I/O Error at 70% during the write process. No log for this but I copied the error box: "Invalid Address for write". "CDB: [bunch of numbers] Interpretation: Write (10) Sectors: 2554464-2554495 Sense Area [more numbers] Interpretation: Invalid Address for Write".

Any advice would be much appreciated. And yes, I am expecting the ol' "use better media", and I will next time, but this was my first attempt at DL, and I wanted to 'test' with $4 dvds, not $8 just in case something else was at issue.

i think you just said it yourself :/

unfortunately , the ritek d/l discs aren't good enough on most burners, the occasional good burn may be possible , but generally they make coasters.

are you changing the book type to -ROM using the lite on tab?

i use only verbatim for d/l burns but have seen some promising results from RICOHJPN-D00-01 discs

I've had the same results with RITEK-D01-01 DL discs, failure to verify. The odd one will play well on stand alone players, but I have strong doubts to their widespread compatability and longevity. They've long been considered unreliable DL media, and recent personal testing has shown me that they have not improved. Like Corny says, better media is your best bet.

As expected. Well, at least there is nothing in my logs that point to something in my hardware.

Forgive my ignorance here, but are the bad discs just bad with movies? In other words, can I use these for data? (I already have some very pretty coasters for the cinema, and in any event, I am afraid these discs would harm the nice wood armrests) ;)

I have never used DL's for data, but I would fully expect the same outcome. If it's a matter of just using them for something, I'd use them for video, but make sure you have another version as backup. Or sell them on ebay LOL.

I have had 100% success with Datasafe Ritek D01 discs. It is important to use the latest firmware to maximise writing success.

Contrary to advice given by some experts, blank DVDs are not segregated into those that are more compatible with movies and others for "normal" data like .doc files or whatever. What they store is immaterial. Data is data. Disk quality is the only real difference.

I still laugh when I see people trying to do false economy and throwing away $4 on Riteks instead of "investing" $8 in Verbatims.

What is it that they say about paying peanuts?
