Grain Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 You've got an old drive, and those are pretty new 8X DL discs, that may be the problem. Latest firmware for that drive is a couple years old (as far as I could tell), much older than the media.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Update ImgBurn too or you'll not benefit from the various bug fixes.
Gary D Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Burn goes fine till it finalizes to 2% then device starts clicking and i get error I tried retry a couple times - no good Where were these disks made? There appears to be some defective disks coming from India being sold at Sams Club in the US. Here is the link to CDF about those DLs: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=...ht=Sam%27s+Club
dialupsux Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 These were singaporean (sp?) I guess my dvds will now go on 2 single layer disks instead
dontasciime Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 or just buy a new drive It will more than likely cost less than a pack of those discs
dialupsux Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 I have a sony dru-830a brand new (cant remember why I bought it) If I install it do I have to Install the Software that came with it ? I hate proprietary software with a passion . Why do I think having 2 burners installed at the same time wont work? Are sata dvd devices really better than eide , my hard drives are sata. Just a few of the many questions floating around my brain after a hot day outside. Sorry for the rambling patter
dontasciime Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 The Sony drive you mention it may be brand new to you but if you have never used it and say bought it a couple of years ago, chances are Sony gave up on the firmware after a certain revision and basically said to you tough luck buy a newer model if you want the writer to support all the latest media/dye etc. The drive you have might be one of their newer ones, I lost interest in Sony burners after 2.1a for my dru 500
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I have a sony dru-830a brand new (cant remember why I bought it) If I install it do I have to Install the Software that came with it ? I hate proprietary software with a passion . No. It's just another device that Windows has already installed the drivers for. Why do I think having 2 burners installed at the same time wont work? I don't know. It'll work fine. Are sata dvd devices really better than eide , my hard drives are sata. Dunno. Never used one as I'd rather have harddrives running off sata than optical drives. Please note my disclaimer.
LOCOENG Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 On a side note...a Sony is really not a Sony, but in your case a Samsung drive.
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Samsung? I thought all Sony drives were outsourced to LG?
LOCOENG Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 A little search at freaks yeilded a Samsung SH-182D. 810's are BenQ 1640's and I think the rest are Litey's....
LOCOENG Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares_samsung.html#DRU-830A
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Who said LG? Lite-On. My bad. From memory, Sony stopped making their own drives about 3 years ago.
LOCOENG Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I wouldn't waste my money on one anywhooooo. Save a buck or two and buy from who is really making the drive, it's like buying a premium branded Plextor made by BenQ for $100...just buy the BenQ for $40. Same goes for the Sony drive, I think they were going for around $80 locally or at Sony's online store or you could just go to Newegg and get a Sammy for $40.
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I wish Pioneer would get their act together. My crappy 105 is still the best drive I've ever had. Never a hiccup or complaint. Unlike the Pioneer, LG and Samsung drives I've bought recently.
LOCOENG Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I'd like to get a new NEC drive myself, but it seems they have gone to shit as well. I really don't want a Litey, but they seem to be on top right now.
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I've got a newish Lite-On around here somewhere. In a cupboard, I think - where it'll be the most useful.
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Holding up a bottle of bleach no doubt. Dunno. It's around here somewhere. I think it's almost time to get another skip bin and toss out some of the computer stuff that just seems to accumulate. I filled a 6 cubic metre skip with computer crap last time I did a clean up.
Altercuno Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Be careful what you throw in a skip Shamus. You might have a team turn up doing some 'dumpster diving'...
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 If they want to go dumpster diving for old harddrives, CD-ROMs, video cards, network cards, monitors and various other bits of unwanted crap, they're welcome to it. I drill a hole in old harddrives before they go into the bin.
LOCOENG Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Or you could just box it up and send it my way....I'm sure alot of it is better than what I'm using in this 5 year old VAIO.
