I am new to this forum.

I have been using ImgBurn for over a year in my older system with XP, and no problems. A couple of months ago the old system crashed (mobo + power supply). So I got a new system and am sort of forced to use VISTA. Now, problems! The origingal DVD burner in the new system crashed at about 3 weeks, and the vendor replaced it with a (Philips) GSA-H30L. This drive does not support quality scanning, so I added in a Samsung SH-S203B. This is a great drive! :) But-- Here are the problems :(

1) I can no longer set the book type - ImgBurn goes throught the motions, and reports success! but the disk still has DVD+R as the book type, and as the media type.

2) I am getting an error in the disk finalization at 99% complete. The retry succeeds. But the DVDinfopro scan shows a very very large PI and PO error rate (usually 700 to 1200 +) in the last 1%. That is, the scans look great up to 99%. I was using MCC 004 (Verbatum) media when the problem began, and did not want to waste my good meda in tests. So, now I am testing with some leftover CMC Mag M01. The Samsung drive does suprisingly well - QS 98+%!. I do not see the problems with the Philips burner, but the burns with the CMC media are not very good. The problem occurs the same if I use the build and burn mode as if I first build a .iso file, and then burn.

Also, I did not have a problem with the Samsung burner until I updated the Norton Internet security 2007 to Norton 360. I removed the Norton 360, and reinstalled NIS 2007, and the problem was resolved. However, the NIS 2007 (OEM 90 day trial is expiring). Reinstalling Norton 360 did reintroduce the problem. I contacted Symantec, and they suggested there might be a problem with the GEAR (filter) driver. I verified the version I have / had installed is the recommended, current version.

So, Is there possibly a conflict of some sort between ImgBurn and Norton 360? Or, am I missing something?

Here is the filter order:

Check which IDE port you have writer on and update the drivers if jmicron.

If your using nvidia drivers take them out and use standard MS ones.

change the Ide cable and make sure its an 80 wire ide cable and maybe make the samsung master, maybe even try it as a slave.

I'd ditch the IVIASPI drivers myself. I'm sure it can't be that important!

The booktype issue is due to the finalisation process failing. Even if it succeeds a second time around, the drive will have forgotten that it needed to set the booktype - doh!

Were the verbatim discs also failing to finalise properly?

Thank you for the replys!

The answers to your questions are, 1) Verbatum a problem too = yes. 2) The drives are SATA (no IDE to check). (This new system does not have IDE controllers). 3) I am using the "default" display driver set (preinstalled), with the update distrributed by Microsoft. There is an HP update that I have not applied.

I will try deleting the Iviaspi driver.

BTW, I got a little confused in the original post. The burner that failed was the Philips DH16A1L. The replcement is a LG GSA-H30L (HP OEM) with S856 firmware. So, replace Philips with LG in the post.

Posted (edited)

So,

I tried to remove the iviaspi filter from ImgBurn tools ->Filter Driver Load Order, highlight Iviaspi, and click "remove Selected Filter". This does not work in Windows Vista Home Priemum. I get the confirmation request popup, and click ok, but nothing changes. (Same result for both the LG GSA-H30L, and Samsung SH-S203B - the filter order is the same for both.)

Note, I may not have made it clear that I have the finalisation problem only with the Samsung drive. The LG works correctly, but dose not provide the same high quality burn.

I do not know another "easy" way to just remove the filter. So, I uninstalled the WinDVDCreator3 application (that installed the filter). The removal seemed to work OK, but after a system restart both DVDburners were gone! Attempts to reinstall the devices failed, with an error from windows that a driver could not be found. The drives do appear in the device manager list, and the filter list was as expected. WinDVDCreator3 is not officially Vista supported, and Coral (Intervideo) does not have plans for an update (per their website). I have seen this type issue previously with other programs. i.e. install / work, but can not properly remove.

I reinstalled the WinDVDCreator3 app, and the burners are back in the configuration, and working as before. I know there is a possible registry edit to remove the filters, but I can not remenber the details, and can not seem to find the key I remember seeing when the HP support rep. was looking at the system before replacing the failed Philips burner. Can you provide the registry edit details? If not, and if the filter must be removed, I will have to do a full backup and Windows recovery + application reinstall.

Thanks for your help so far.

Thank you.

You are correct.

I realized that just after I made the last post.

I did indeed "run as administrator", and removed the iviaspi filter, and restart. But, it has made no difference!

The filter order is now

Interesting points.

1) I had no problem untill I installed Norton 360.

2) The problem only affects the Samsung drive.

3) Both Norton and itunes use the GEAR upper filter (the Gear driver was installed by itunes before there were any problems).

I did, previously, restore proper operation by removing Norton 360, and reinstalling the original NIS 2007 (but I think the 90 day trial is expired - or is about to expire).

So, if Ican't use Norton 360, I need to find another firewall / antivirus solutiion. Any suggestions?

Today, I have another relpy from Symantec support. They reference:

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/norto...007031608540975

Eesentially, they claim the problem is caused by some Symantic proceses are not starting.

I followed the suggetions, and managed to add another problem to the list. I know about this one, so I will do some more troubleshooting.

That was a joke willb ;)

There's only 1 drive per sata cable so master/slave doesn't come into it.

If uninstalling Norton 360 really does fix the problem, I'd love to know what the hell they're doing to kill things!

Posted

Sorry willb

What I was drawing attention to was that I told you to set master slave , which you cannot do on SATA as I replied to your post as if you were using and IDE drive.

My mistake

Posted

Hi dontasciime,

That is OK. :)

Now, for a summary of the results of some more extensive trouble shooting:

I swapped the LG and Samsung burner's (switched data cables) so that the Samsung would be "F", and the LG would be "G" to see if some other appication (norton) was "hanging someting" on the logical unit. The problems followed the Samaung drive! Then I removed Norton 360, as I had done when the problem began. Again, the problem persisted with the Samsung drive. I then burned additional disks with CMC Mag R01 (old media). and got consistent (bad) results.

I also tried to use another burning engine (2 actually). The Sony Vagas DVD Archect Studio completed the burn with no error reports, but the book type was DVD+R (it automatically sets DVD-ROM), so there was the same finalisation error! I then used ROXIO EMC 9, basic (copy function) to burn using a .iso made from the same file set (I used only 1 file set for all the tests to limit some variables). ROXIO reported an error at the end (finalisation), but it does not do recovery?? (The lack of control, and status information in these app's is why I use ImgBurn.)

The DVDinfopro scans for all the disks show the same pattern - a usually very large PI "spike" between 99% and end. Note, the spike is usually around 600, but I have seen as much as 1500+, and as small as about 80. There is often a PIF spike also, but usually about 80 to 150, and sometimes much larger. :(

I could post a bunch of scans and traces, but I think they would just make the thread very long, with out adding much new information.

So, my conclusion is the drive has developed a problem, and I will do an excahnge!

I must add, for the first 18 +/- burns, the results were very good QS = 99% =/- 0.2%, then the drive went intermittent, (my first go round with OK after removing Norton 360). Now, the drive is consistently having problems finalising.

Thanks for the help and advice! :)

To be honest, I've seen a few reports of samsung drives not finalising properly...maybe it's just a general issue with them?

Let's hope the next firmware update fixes that.

It has been about 3 months since this was updated. Here is what happened.

I repaced (RMA) the SH-S203B, and that cleated up the problem - for only 9 burns!

So, another RMA and a 3rd SH-S203B. The 3rd burner worked well for 26 burns, and then developed the

finalisation problem. I was about to give up on Samsung. But, while I was looking for a repacement,

ImgBurn 2.4.0.0 became available.

The new "auto retry" feature works! :) But, after 3 burns, I get::angry:

I've also got a SH-S203B, although it does not seem to work very well with imgburn regardless of firmware, I still get "Potential 'WaitImmediateIO' Deferred Error - (99%, 0/3) - Program Memory Area Update Failure"

Although the discs "work" (at least in my pc) since the second attempt at finalizing the disc always works, the quality is quite poor and my standalone dvd/divx/xvid player won't play them at all.

The thing is I burned one successfull dvd with imgburn, afterwhich I've not been able to create a single other good disc, while other programs such as for example "cdburnerxp" works just fine.

Here's a comparision of my latest attempt with imgburn and cdburnerxp

Same files, same media, same boot cycle, firmware, etc, etc using cdburnerxp:post-10662-1203520998_thumb.png

Also the disc plays just fine in my standalone dvd/divx/xvid-player.

I'm not saying this is neccesarily imgburner's fault, but there does seem to be some issue with (at least) the sh-s203b and imgburner, considering other apps seem to work fine.

And yeah, true enough the media might not be top quality, but I've tried 8-9 dvd's with imgburner (of which first was successful, also that first one did not have to retry in order to finalize disc), and next disc I pick (for cdburnerxp) happens to be good?

It's not impossible the media was bad, but it doesn't seem very likely imho, I'm not going to try more discs with imgburner unless I get some tips on what may be at fault apart from the media.

Any ideas?

You've got some rogue pif spike in there (that's not even visible on the graph), the burn quality is the same on both otherwsie!

Don't scan at max speed. Use 4x.

Change the 'Scale' fields to Auto.

btw, cdburnerxp might not catch the errors that ImgBurn is catching. As an end user, you've no real way of knowing as you have to snoop on the I/O calls.

I don't hide anything from the user, what you see is what you get. If the drive reports an error then you'll know about it. Not all software works like that.

ImgBurn also has a whole load of options that you can mess around with to see if it helps you out with your drive.

For example:

Write Type

DVD+R Reserve Track

Posted (edited)

Well, although I really do like to know what my apps are doing, my problem is not the error itself, the thing is, I've got 7 "coasters" lying around that imgburner created for me which won't play in my standalone dvd-player, which is really the problem.

The scans I posted were mainly an attempt to see what was causing it. The retry on finalizing the disc didn't happen on the one disc imgburner made that worked fine, and so I simply assumed it is probably related to the issues I'm having. Also I've changed nothing in imgburner's settings since the one good disc was made.

Judging from how my standalone player is trying to load the discs (instead of just refusing like when using the wrong filesystem/etc), imho it really seems there's a burn-error linked to the retry-method/issue.

Here's a new scan with the settings you suggested, up until 99% of the scan the PI peak was at 17, so really something seems to have gone wrong when finalizing the disc

post-10662-1203524040_thumb.png

Oh and make no mistake, I'm writing this only because I want to use imgburner instead

Damn, more invisible PIE/PIF spikes! Fancy seeing if CDSpeeds actually shows them?

I'm not sure I have any Sony D11 discs or I'd run a few through my S203B to compare.

Do you have any other media that also fails... maybe I'll have those?!

Posted

Don't have any other dvdr's unfortunately (I didn't use dvd's much previously, since my computer used to be next to the tv), got some cdr's but that's about it :/

Anyways, after a bit of regedit hacking I managed to get cdspeed allowing me to run the disc quality test (see http://club.cdfreaks.com/f96/cdspeed-4-7-7...onflict-236004/ )

Unfortunately, cdspeed didn't even detect the spike (even after I set the end position after the end of the disc image)

post-10662-1203534364_thumb.png

It is however showing similiar numbers to those that dvdinfopro showed right before the last 1%. (except for PI failures? lots more in total?)

When finalizing a cd imgburner did not have to retry, gave no error messages and the disc worked fine in my standalone player.

Here's another scan with dvdinfopro with a ss at 99%

post-10662-1203537023_thumb.png

post-10662-1203537028_thumb.png

Oddly enough this time around with the same disc, indicated a much much lower PI peak, it will still not load in the standalone player though.

And just to mess things up a bit more I ran a kprobe as well (which really seems to verify cdspeed's numbers):

post-10662-1203538377_thumb.png

Setting kprobe to overscan though (only last blocks and a few "past" the end):

post-10662-1203539124_thumb.png

Could it be that imgburner finalizes the disc twice/doesn't give the drive/disc/computer enough time when finalizing and jumping to a retry too quickly? Since there's apparantly a spike right after (@ 1DFEDF) the "actual" end (@ 1DFECF) of the image? I'm just speculating, don't really know the exact specs of how and where filetables, image/partition specs etc are stored on dvd's.

Posted

It shouldn't need a 'retry' to make it finalise properly, that's the whole point :)

TSST drives are by far the worst for this problem.

Have you tried changing the 'Write Type' yet as mentioned earlier?

Or enabling 'DVD+R Reserve Track' ?

I'd be interested to see if those discs then played on your standalone.

btw, what are you burning there... I ask because you're only using the ISO9660 file system rather than Joliet or UDF. Is there a reason for that?

If you've got a working (in the standalone) disc anywhere, make an image in Read mode and then use that as your source to burn in Write mode - just to rule everything else out.

Posted

Sorry, thought you mentioned those options more like features that might in some (general) cases help..

"DVD+R Reserve Track" seems to actually have worked(!), although I did accidently leave burning speed to "auto" (meaning 12x while sony d11 is 8x rated, at least as far as I know). At least with "reserve track" option and 12x seems to be working fine, the disc is playing without a hitch in my standalone player and no errors were logged by imgburner.

Actually the first (good) disc was also done in 12x, but I did also get several coasters @12x (as well as finalize retries), so burning speed is at least not the only cause/solution.

ISO9660 is used primarily since the specs for what discs that will play is very very vaguely described in the manual for my standalone player (samsung dvd-p245), but ISO9660 was one of the specs I found and since i successfully used that format for at least one disc I've kept using that format, the filename restriction isn't really that big of a deal to me since I'm keeping all of the material on my fileserver anyways.

Will do some scans and more tests tomorrow after work, but thanks for all your help so far!

idomagic,

You are frightening me!

I was hopping I dd not really have to find a new burner, as ImgBurn 2.4.0.0, and the firmware update (SB03) had worked around or fixed the burner problems.

But - It apears that the burners are at their "intermittent" stage of failure. They sometimes work correctly, if they have not been used for a day or so, but become progresively worse, until total failure.

Your scan's do show the problems:

1) The booktype is DVD+R (not DVD-ROM, as is set automaticaly by ImgBurn).

2) There is a large error spike in your "bad burns". It is a barely visable red line right next to the white bar that marks the end of the recorded data. Your last kprobe scan does clearly show the error. I have seen the PI "burst" as high as 1600, and PIF over 100!

The incorrect booktype may be the reason that the finished disc is not recognized by your stand alone player. Some players are really finicky about this point. Settng the booktype to DVD-ROM was a big part of the +R media contribution, and failing this function means the burner does not (properly) support +r/+rw.

These are burner problems, and not ImgBurn! Imgburn just provides the details.

Your cdburnerxp graph shows the incorrect booktype (DVD+R) as is in the other burns.

Your experience parallels mine. I did compares with Vagas DVD Archect Studio, and Roxio Easy Media Creator, and got pretty much the same results with out the visibility of the details.

I have a Samsung SH-S203B (FW:SB02) (Don't see SB03 on rpc1 site?). I have gotten disks to work, but again setting the booktype "manually" returns a "Unknown (Failed!)". So knowing this, it makes sense that media isn't playing on some stand alones. I have searched and found links to the newer firmware, but strictly speaking Samsung site still lists SB02 as newest. I think I download SB03 from softpedia, so this is okay to use on mine? Did this correct your set booktype function?

I have write fails at around 75% (14x +-) of disk write. Usually (DVD movie burns specifically) so I think maybe it is just trying to burn at too high a rate for media?

Don't have a log right now..forgot to save. (damn and already have two coasters... :) I do have DVDInfo image.

Thanks.
