Mr Shankly Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Hi all. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. I didn't know drives kept secrets ha ha! Here is the log from Imgburn. I uninstalled it because it came up with 'No Devices Detected!' upon scanning for SCSI devices. It had never done this before, so I uninstalled it, re-booted and re-installed it. Still the same error: I 17:19:25 ImgBurn Version 2.4.4.0 started! LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 You've probably picked up a virus. There's one going around that seems to make what you're seeing there happen.
eraz0r Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Hi all. Still the same error: It has nothing to do with the ImgBurn. I replied to the guy with the same problem in another thread. Here is the link: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtop...ost&p=92085 In two words: you have virus/malware. Check my link in the post above, you'll find more info/solution there.
Mr Shankly Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Thanks guys. Off to view the link and clean up my system.
SpeedyStone Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Thanks guys. Off to view the link and clean up my system. BZZZZZZ!!! Ingore those two guys. Sorry, but they are idiots. It's NOT A VIRUS. It's a legitimate Microsoft error code. You are permitted up to 4092 "secret" or in normal speak... encrypted... files. I started getting this because I got a disk that caused a MASSIVE number of read errors. What I can't find, however, is how to find, much less remove, the files to get the drives working again. The only reference I found is some really obscure thing about LSA (local security authority). A virus scan, however, will show you are virus free. Other idiots will tell you it has to do with the last program you loaded. I'm surprised I haven't heard someone claim it's got something to do with moon phases or such. I would advise you to consider anyone that gives a idiotic generic response to you as being an idiot. If they can't be at least a little specific... like "it's XYZ virus" or "The error is in reference to"... then the people "answering" you are likely talking out of their rear ends. PS: If you find a solution, let me know... (email removed) Thanks!!
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 lol, you tool. In the past few weeks we've had several reports of people running into this problem and yet that's pretty much the first we've seen of it in the 3 years this board has been going. Are you trying to tell me it's just a coincidence that all these people hit the same snag with 'read errors' on their hdd at the same time?! Get real.
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 BZZZZZZ!!! Ingore those two guys. Sorry, but they are idiots. It's NOT A VIRUS. It's a legitimate Microsoft error code. Tell me, what's it like being able to go through life completely oblivious to the outside world? Is it a gift or just a mild form of stupidity? How many people do you know that store 4000 encrypted files on their harddisk? Idiot.
cornholio7 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 i did see this here Just battled this out on an Acer Aspire desktop. Vista home premium. Itturned out to be Webroot Spysweeper that was the offending program that caused the "the maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded" message. Un-installed it and now system restore works fine. No more message. As a note the program was functioning and seemingly working ok but apparently something was wrong... Hope this helps... whether it is true or not , i have no idea, i am not installing it to find out
spinningwheel Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 BZZZZZZ!!! Ingore those two guys. Sorry, but they are idiots. Asshole, one of them is the programs creator and the other is a frequent contributor that seldomly pulls info out of his ass. spinner

chewy Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12709 On using rootrepeal and MBAM to remove this rootkit
techelper Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 (edited) http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12709 On using rootrepeal and MBAM to remove this rootkit I had the error message maximum number of secrets has been exceeded. My dvd/cd drives were not detected. Tried a format of my Hd reinstall to no avail. In the end I downloaded RootRepeal (free) - http://rootrepeal.googlepages.com/ As mentioned above ran a scan found and deleted a few processes that had spuriously long names. e.g. ghyxvhjgjh that were running from the system32 directory. These were not got rid of with a fresh xp install. Deleted them rebooted and voila. Imgburn picks up both my dvd roms again. I am sure I picked up the bug whilst installing some kind of video player software. I hope this helps. Edited April 27, 2009 by techelper
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 A proper format of the hdd and reinstall the OS from scratch didn't fix it? Sorry but I don't see how that's possible?!
AdvancedSetup Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) Only way possible is if it had an MBR virus. Otherwise you'd have had to reinfect it during the install, which is quite possible if you're not sure of what you're doing, or have had infected media. Edited April 28, 2009 by AdvancedSetup
wolfj Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 tried all suggestions root repal crashs found no malwear or spyware no virus and still get that error msg used imgburn 2 days afo no problems today secrets error open to any other suggestions shy of reinstalling xp from scratch again did it 2 weeks ago
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 You might find it's crashing *because* of the virus / malware. You might like to try gmer ( http://www.gmer.net/ ) too - failing that, go for the reinstall. Just be careful not to reinfect yourself when rebuilding.
Altercuno Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Dunno if its already been suggested or if it helps but I've read on other forums that Dr Web AV helps with this... Sorry for posting this info late, think I've got swine flu...came out in rashers...
chewy Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum103.html Post at the Am I Infected forum or at the MBAM forum http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=7 AdvancedSetup and others would be interested in this Imgburn error Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop: Main MirrorThis version will download a randomly named file (Recommended) Zipped MirrorThis version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop. Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs. Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver. Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked. Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe. GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress) If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO. Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK. When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log. Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply. Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done. -- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I don't think those tool just pop up saying they've found something nasty, you need to already know what you're looking for.
