your firmware is from nov 2004 and a rarer oem type
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#SOHW-1653S
the CSOT basic firmware is a year newer, you would have to use the patched version to crossflash your drive
don't worry about messing up your drive, it's time for it to be retired if the flash doesn't help
those disks are terrible

after trying better media I would ask for a new drive under warranty, and make sure it's not a matshita
-
South Bridge:
- 1 x floppy disk drive connector via the I/O controller supporting up to 1 floppy disk drive
- 3 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATAII0, SATAII1, SATAII2) supporting up to 3 SATA 3Gb/s devices
- 1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port on the back panel supporting up to 1 SATA 3Gb/s device
JMicron 368 chip:
- 1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices
no jmicron driver listed but I didn't know they made just an ide chip, has esata also so I would suspect that one of the sata's is controlled by the jmicron
device manager should give a clue

there's not a lot of choice in external drives, where are you located? region of the world?
be sure and ask about particular models before buying, you don't want some crossbranded piece of crap
-
but i cant find any f/w. and i'm at a loss as to where else to look for it.
it's not easy but I love my benq 1650
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=178571
but then it's not that hard either
be sure and use a pink trenchcoat for proper crossflashing

I'm using TDK DL DVD+R(rw)
it probably won't matter if you turn them either way or what side of the equator you are on, they won't work very well
buy verbatim
laptop drives have a hard time burning quality single layer dvd's, forget dual layer
-
well basically usb is a problematic interface, the cpu has to do almost all the work, and to top that off it's a shared resource
reviews of that burner were good, they reported a firewire interface also, it's a better option if you have it than usb
I have 50 of em sitting in a stack with perfect quality movies on em.whenever you get into quality scanning and data preservation for the long haul, you'll reevaluate that statement
it might take a year or two, it did for me

data disks are better kept around 4 gigs in size, single layer media is much easier to burn and much more relaible with a lot more burners
there are enough cases where you have to have dual layer, but not for data, especialy mp3's
-
as long as you have usb2 on your laptop then an external is a better option, try the 4x burn tho
-
welcome to the forum
set imgburn for build mode, and then add files
set destination for your burner
see the guides
-
welcome to the forum
burning at 8X with that old of a laptop drive is a little dangerous, lower burn speed to 4x
the blanks are great at 8X in a newer dvd burner, laptop burners are not as good as regular full size, they break down quicker also
ps, it's better to start your own thread
-
my mistake, what's the motherboard? and which sata controller are you running off of?

x64 Edition
[3:2:0]
must be some interesting drivers here

I have the newest firmware
more like the first official release
1.04 would be the latest one, non-cracked from nec
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2358
of course I would liggy's 104bt for bitsetting dvd+r's

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtop...mp;hl=GWA-4166B
might help to reflash and look at the filter driver load order?

If you had read the dual layer burn posts in this forum first
I already wasted 2 dl dvds and they aren´t exactly cheap!you would have saved some money by buying good disks, verbatim 2.4x
-
the vob files in a dvd video complaint file set are mpeg2 but there's more to making a playable video dvd than that

dell benq 1640, great drive, poor support from dell
benq's are like thoroughbreds, they like a good diet
my 1620 and 1650 will burn that mid tho
looks like most people just changed their drive to the benq 1640
Burn failes at 51% (layerbreak?)
