  1. Built myself a new computer, and am about to re-install the antivrus software. Was going to go with AVG again, but thought I'd ask you gents first which is best freeware out there first? Having good luck with AVG so far, and have no reservations to using it again. Spyware?

  2. Which is better betweeen the two, + or -? I've only tried Verbatims +R's, and had fair luck with them(both 8 and 16X). Haven't tried their -R's though.

  3. I'll be saving for the 60GB version also. Talking about PS2's, I paid $450 for my first PS2, 6ish years ago, and remember others paying 500+. So considering what is in the machine, it's not that big an increase. The PS2 is what a 333mhz processor, 32mb video card etc, nothing compared to what the 3 has, for only $1-200 more, now, and the price will drop, significantly eventually. Considering that with the 360 you'll need to buy a seperate HD-DVD player to be a comparible machine, I bet the prices will be nearly identicle. Hell, a bare bones Toshiba HD-DVD player is $600! I bet BluRay players will be just as much, to get a console and a new format player for $6-700 seems not unreasonable. But if it were $200 I'd not complain

  4. It is probably your media. I got into a 50 disc spindle of Verbatim +R 8X discs a week ago, had 7 duff discs out of 15 so far. Same error as you've got, same media ID MCC-003-00. Have a look at where it quit burning on the disc, on mine it's burning not quite a GB, which translates into about a cm of burn. At the edge of where it quit burning, there are 1-2 dye "splashes"(looks like there was a tiny explosion in the disc), noticable to the naked eye. Nothing visible before burning though. Let us know if you see the same thing. Bot mine at Staples in Canada, I'll be taking up Verbatim on their lifetime warranty, also have a +R DL they're getting back, my Pioneer didn't do a nice job at 8X with it's new firmware.

  5. Pulled my 3520 out, last 3 firmwares I tried made a great burner mediocre. If it had faster DL burning I'd probably have spent more time going back to older firmware .

  6. value packaging and marketing maybe but I have as yet to see any quality difference

Even there, the value line discs I've got in the past were packed almost exactly the same as the regulars, tape wrapped 100 disc's. The round white paper insert is supposedly different, ie doesn't say TY anywhere, also supposedly says 4X(TYG03's may be diff. as they don't burn well under 8X with some older burners), but I didn't keep any to verify. Like you say, I personally have had no probs., others have, but who knows, that may be once again a soft tissue problem.

  7. I keep hoping they'll drop the paper $5, and replace it with a coin. I think Weird Al was talking about our old $5. I see the US paper money now has some colour, not just the plain green on all bills of old. Always had trouble with their money, I tipped a $10 bill in a coffee shop down in Idaho once, dropped it in the tip jar thinking it was a $1. Was too embaressed to pull it out.

  8. Did some digging, and apparently all new Value Line will be TYG03's, printables and non. I'm wondering if it's time to start stocking up on "Premium Line" TYG02's (ie if they've stopped production and moved on to strictly 16X media now). I would hazard a guess that there's millions of them in wharehouses though.

  9. Don't misinterpret my post as being negative, I've had great luck with TYG01's, and wish they were still easily available. Apparently TY themselves call these Value Line, as does my online shop.

He's lucky if he can still get G01's, most Value Line stuff is now G03's, can even get printable's. As "regular" TYG02's are only $5 per 50 more where I shop, I stick to those now. Have bot several spindles in the past though, and only had 2 failures. You could see a speck on the dye, causing the problem. Once TYG03's started showing up in the Value Line, and I started to read about more of the "speck" discs showing up more frquently, I stopped buying them.

Apparently you can tell the difference, but it's not easy. Sometimes the number stamped into the plastic (at the hub) is double stamped, but not always. Supposedly the numbers themselves will tell you, but I'm not privy to such info.

  10. Sounds like Taiyo's Value Line. It's all their seconds that they sell cheap, but only in N.A. Taiyo only rates them at 4X, even though they may be TYG01, TYG02, or TYG03 depending on the lot. Some less scrupulous retailers don't mention that their not Taiyos guaranteed best, but as a rule they are very decent as the scan shows.
