  2. I know, I know, buy good disks, until now I've had phenominal results with the Sony's, but they were YUDEN disks, I've put the package labels side by side, but other than an almost unreadable number beside the UPC code there is no difference on the labels, and other than the etched? number on the center hub which is not visible in the sealed package there is no visible difference between the disc themselves. So what's a poor defenseless consumer to do?

If you look on the paper label that comes around the spindle, the SONY MID discs will show Made in Taiwan, and the YUDEN discs will be Made in Japan. I've had 100% success with this on Sony 1-8X -R's & 1-8X +R's.

  3. Unfortunately those discs are that "touchy", sometimes they work, sometimes not. They won't burn @1X as that isn't a speed rated by them, newer 16X discs often aren't rated at lower than 4X. Don't worry about O@P-!-00, some discs just show up that way. Michel Deboer's NEC firmware site show's your 1.80 firmware, so you should be fine.

  4. I agree wholeheartedly. Strange thing is, CMC makes the good Verbatims, yet can't make a good one of their own to save their life.

Your Kidding of course........ aren't you. :o I never knew that ! As you say then, that begs the question, if CMC can make dye for top media like Verbatim, then why the hell can't they do it for themselves. Would make more sense to capture a bigger share of the market by making good quality CMC MAG discs and selling for a bit higher price then to settle for a lower end of the market by producing cheap crappy dyes for there own labeled discs........... :/:blink:

Afraid it's quite true. CMC makes the good Verbs, Prodisc makes some quite sketchy ones (here in NA that is, Europe has MBIL thrown in the mix). Couple ways to tell them apart, one involves the serial number stamped in the plastic near the hub on the disc itself (which of course involves buying them first), the other believe it or not involves the font used on the spindle tub lids for Lock and Open.

  5. Pioneer is showing 1.58 as the latest firmware for the 109, is yours a hacked firmware? Anyway, looks like you might just have got a bad disc, which is very rare for Verb MKM-001-00 discs, but not unheard of. If you send it back to them, they will honor their lifetime warranty and send you a replacement.

  6. 99% of the time that's a poor media problem. If you could copy the info from the top right window (in ImgBurn) when you have one of the discs in the drive, and post it here, we'll know what kind of blanks they are.

  7. If you could post the serial number from the bottom of the disk BillB, the one that 's very small and on the clear part of the hub and also nearest to the hub, not the one on the edge of the dye. That will tell us whether your Verbatims are made by Prodisc or CMC(assuming your in North America, if your in Europe they could also be made by MBIL in India). There are starting to be problems with Prodisc made Verbs, CMC's seem excellent so far.

I've decided this drives a keeper. Does a very nice job (IMO) on the media I use for personal archiving (Taiyo & Verb). Only "quirks" I've noticed so far is write speeds on crap media, ex those Fuji DL's (RITEK D01-01 dye) the only speed it will burn them at is 4X, no 2.4 (although strangely did a good job on them, will add it to the media section/Fujifilm DL's). Also picked up some Maxell 16X -R's for testing (RITEKF1 dye) and it will only zap them at 4X, once again not important to me.

  11. I found that Verbatim 50- and 100-packs do not have the same quality as 25-packs. PIEs are twice as much and PIFs are 6-13

times as much. In short, crappy media. BenQ's Qscan tests also SHOW that the

Verbatim 25-packs have lower errors than 50s and 100s.

I'm skeptical of that. I have 25's, 50's & 100's(Verbatim) in my larder, and I can't scan a difference. I find it extremely hard to believe that a company producing 10's to 100's of thousands of discs a day (or more) is going to take the time to produce different quality discs and then not charge more for them and/or not label them as such.
