  1. AFAIK the GBW is exactly the same hardware as the GGW, the only difference is firmware that allows reading of HD DVD discs. Further Sebaz, with the latest firmware YL07 I can tell you that Memorex BD-Rs burn flawlessly with the LG writer, and are of extremely high quality, at least the two different types that I have used.
  2. No, it is not possible. At least, if you intended to use the resulting disc with a set-top DVD player, it won't know what to do with it. You'd have to re-author the DVDs to make a single VIDEO_TS. P.S. You can, of course, burn the two sets onto the DVD-DL, but only for storage/backup/safekeeping, not for playback on a STB.
  3. Well then, "never mind"! I completely misunderstood. Can't imagine why they'd smell different from any other disc in creation OOB.
  4. Dunno about Lightscribe discs myself, but you said it "stinks" and that can only mean a residue of some sort. Even if there is a "clear layer" that protects from the material that forms the label impression, it must be burning a little to throw-off a smell. I'd still have to guess that it would fog the laser lens over time...
  5. I would guess that the "scent particles" are thrown-up from the surface of the disc only when the label side's being burned, and since the disc is upside-down at that point the particles drop and/or are propelled around the inside of the drive until the process is over. But once you've removed the disc and set it aside, there should be no further particles created to worry about. I'd be curious: If you Lightscribe a disc, then wipe the label side with a perfectly clean cloth, do you see any residue?
  6. Further, this statement would concern me: the "stink" you refer to can only be particles in the air which are part of the lightscribe-burning process. I would have to surmise that such residue might also eventually coat the innards of one's drive, particularly the laser lens. I have numerous LG Lightscribe drives, though I have never tried that feature, and now I never will--thanks!
  7. I wonder what it is specifically that you are looking forward to?
  8. To make a Blu-ray disc structure i.e. BDMV, you need Blu-ray Authoring software--you can't just burn mp4 and wmv files as-is. Look at multiAVCHD freeware--might do it but dunno about either of those filetypes you have. Once you have a valid BDMV structure in place, ImgBurn will burn that to recordable DVD whether single- or double-layer, and it will (maybe) play on your Samsung settop player--some players work with these discs and some do not. So you don't NECESSARILY need a BD burner to burn BD movies, although either your Disk Size or your Bitrate exceeds the capabilities of a recordable DVD, then you need BD-R for recording.
  9. There are probably some good reasons to install DiskDirector to the OS, but I never found a need for anything but booting my PC from a boot disc and doing partition manipulations from there. No W7 compatibility issues that way.
  10. EaseUS' free offerings seem almost too good to be true, and owing to my natural state (of Paranoia) I became uncomfortable using ToDo. I'll keep Partition Master in mind if my ADD10 boot disk ever fails to do what I want (I never upgraded to 11).
  11. The interesting (unfortunate) aspect of these imaging programs is that nobody has exactly the same problems as anyone else. I attribute this to different PC configurations, both hardware and drivers. I have tried (too many) imaging programs, most recently Macrium and EaseUS, and for my particular setup(s) including a netbook, I've gravitated-back to ATI, but since 2010 actually WORKS for me, in every way that I need/want it to, I will never "upgrade" it i.e. I have to resist like hell the temptation to take advantage of whatever upgrade may be offered to me!
  12. I've had ATI since release 1.0, and IME they got funky after v7.0. I didn't even have much luck with ATI 11 myself, was finding "corrupt" images on restore. Not good. I'm now running ATIH2010 and it is rock-solid, apart from some glitches in the Linux-based rescue disc. Yeah I hear poor reports about 2011. As for Macrium Reflect, it's cool but their Free version's Rescue disk doesn't Backup, and its Restore doesn't work with my USB3.0 GoFlex. If I were not already invested in ATI, Macrium is the product I'd be using though (I think their WinPE (payware) version solves the USB issues).
  13. Well, you want confirmation I guess and I can tell you that I bought the GoFlex USB3.0 2Tb drive and am deliriously happy with it. I can back-up a full system image to it in under 5 minutes, where it used to take nearly a half hour. NOW, I will also point-out that I've seen complaints from people on at least the Acronis forum about having trouble with 3Tb drives--something about the rescue environment not dealing with the 3Tb aspect, and having to re-partition to <2Tb. Dunno if this will impact you at all but there you have it. This is my 3rd Seagate USB drive going back maybe 5 years, now 3 different models of desktop ext hdd, and I've been happy i.e. the other two are still in service and working flawlessly (knocking-on-wood here now!).
  14. Yes, afaict there is no limit to the size of an ISO w/ImgBurn, but you should use the right tool for the job. Macrium Reflect is an imaging software which has a free version, but its rescue/recovery disk is Linux-based and might not work if your PC has very new hardware e.g. maybe USB3.0 or SATAIII. But EaseUS also has a free image program which seems to do it all, including disk cloning. Give that one a try--everyone who maintains PCs needs to be doing image backups.
  15. Though I guarantee you there will be a time when you'll wish you hadn't lost the old log entries! And they don't take up that much space anyway...
  16. Yes if you're saying michael that you have multiple ISO files that will fit on DVD discs together, just drag/drop/burn as data files. For sure you will want to make multiple copies of family movies, because recordable DVDs are notorious for failure i.e. are not ideal for long-term safekeeping.
  17. Thanks alot for indulging me--I vaguely recall that I've seen this before but it needs to get pounded into my head...
  18. I have encountered "Verify errors" at times, and even posted here about them myself, and then they go away for dozens of burns at a time. So I assume the errors are glitches with the media, which for me have fortunately been rare, very rare indeed (and I use the "good" Verbatims most of the time i.e. not their Life Series discs). You can try another tool e.g. Nero DiscSpeed to see if it reads your disc OK, and in this case it's a movie so you can play it and it's possibly (even likely) that it will play OK in which case you can just forget about the verify error. But if you've never run Memtest86+ on your PC or done other performance testing maybe you have a hardware problem too. BTW LUK the log entry "BD-R Verify Not Required: Yes" is confusing--what does it mean exactly when Verify is clearly ON?
  19. I asked if the Verbatims were "Life Series" (If I Recall Correctly) because these are cheaper discs and I wondered if that's what you had and thus they are manufactured at CMC. To my knowledge you should only use MediaCodeSpeedEdit to confirm what media your drive supports; it is not likely to help you to manually fudge the CMC media into the LG's firmware.
  20. Yes, that's what I used. You can Export the list to a text file for easier reading or printout. Computerlove I'm curious--are your discs genuine Verbatim? Might they be the new "Life Series" (iirc) type?
  21. Hmmm I didn't know Verbatim was using CMC factory for any of their discs. Anyway the "YL07" caught my eye as I have the GGW-H20L, and looking at the supported media types, yours is not listed: BD-R supported media types: 66 ------------------------------------------ ANWELL R04-004 2x CMCMAG BA2-000 2x CMCMAG BA3-000 4x,2x CMCMAG BA3-000 4x,2x CMCMAG BB5-000 4x,2x Daxon R2X-000 2x Daxon R2X-000 2x ... I think this means you are out-of-luck with this media! But thanks for alerting me to the new LG firmware--first in 2 1/2 years!
  22. As has already been suggested, try backing-off from MAX. I've had excellent success with that media (Memorex brand) with my LG burners, but at 4x. Haven't tried 8x myself. My old PIO DVR-109 will do it at 2.4x but I haven't used that in a long time. P.S. I also "Perform OPC Before Write" with my LG drives--dunno if that might help for you or not.
  23. Well, what you say makes perfect sense; in hindsight the term "I/O" certainly implies same, if not exactly whacking me over the head! Anyway I believe what you say until LUK sez otherwise, thanks.
  24. Yup, I got it backwards. So would it be correct to say that if the Read Buffer Size in Build refers (ahem) to a Read Buffer, then the Buffer Size item in I/O settings is referring to the size of a Write Buffer?
  25. There are two buffer adjustments possible: Settings --> I/O --> Page 2 "Buffer Size" Settings --> Build --> Page 2 "Read Buffer Size" AFAICT the "Filling Buffer..." item in the log refers to the "Read Buffer Size", but honestly I have scoured this board and the Guides and don't understand what exactly is the difference between these two settings. If you've searched on "buffer" and see all the posts, we are not alone in our confusion. Hopefully in the next revision LUK will make clear at least which buffer the log entry is referring to. Dunno who is responsible for the Guides but they need some help as well IMHO.
