Maximum number of secrets?

Hi all. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. I didn't know drives kept secrets ha ha!

Here is the log from Imgburn. I uninstalled it because it came up with 'No Devices Detected!' upon scanning for SCSI devices. It had never done this before, so I uninstalled it, re-booted and re-installed it. Still the same error:

It has nothing to do with the ImgBurn. I replied to the guy with the same problem in another thread. Here is the link:

In two words: you have virus/malware. Check my link in the post above, you'll find more info/solution there.

Thanks guys.

Off to view the link and clean up my system.

BZZZZZZ!!! Ingore those two guys. Sorry, but they are idiots. It's NOT A VIRUS. It's a legitimate Microsoft error code. You are permitted up to 4092 "secret" or in normal speak... encrypted... files. I started getting this because I got a disk that caused a MASSIVE number of read errors. What I can't find, however, is how to find, much less remove, the files to get the drives working again. The only reference I found is some really obscure thing about LSA (local security authority). A virus scan, however, will show you are virus free.

Other idiots will tell you it has to do with the last program you loaded. I'm surprised I haven't heard someone claim it's got something to do with moon phases or such. I would advise you to consider anyone that gives a idiotic generic response to you as being an idiot. If they can't be at least a little specific... like "it's XYZ virus" or "The error is in reference to"... then the people "answering" you are likely talking out of their rear ends.

PS: If you find a solution, let me know...

Thanks!!

lol, you tool.

In the past few weeks we've had several reports of people running into this problem and yet that's pretty much the first we've seen of it in the 3 years this board has been going.

Are you trying to tell me it's just a coincidence that all these people hit the same snag with 'read errors' on their hdd at the same time?! Get real.

Tell me, what's it like being able to go through life completely oblivious to the outside world? Is it a gift or just a mild form of stupidity? How many people do you know that store 4000 encrypted files on their harddisk?

Idiot.

i did see this here

Just battled this out on an Acer Aspire desktop. Vista home premium. It

turned out to be Webroot Spysweeper that was the offending program that

caused the "the maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single

system has been exceeded" message. Un-installed it and now system restore

works fine. No more message. As a note the program was functioning and

seemingly working ok but apparently something was wrong... Hope this helps...

whether it is true or not , i have no idea, i am not installing it to find out

On using rootrepeal and MBAM to remove this rootkit

I had the error message maximum number of secrets has been exceeded. My dvd/cd drives were not detected. Tried a format of my Hd reinstall to no avail. In the end I downloaded

RootRepeal (free) - http://rootrepeal.googlepages.com/

As mentioned above ran a scan found and deleted a few processes that had spuriously long names.

e.g. ghyxvhjgjh that were running from the system32 directory. These were not got rid of with a fresh xp install. Deleted them rebooted and voila. Imgburn picks up both my dvd roms again.

I am sure I picked up the bug whilst installing some kind of video player software. I hope this helps.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    gmer_zip.gif

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.

-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
