Ah ok, my guess here then is that you're suffering from the windows caching problem. You machine can cope for a while and then it runs out of ram. That's when things slow down. Discovery mode is identical (in what it does) to the normal write mode, except Write mode reads from a file and Discovery mode just uses fictitious data that I make up on the fly from within the program - as such, no file is ever read.

DVD_RW is actually part of the device name string but it's pointless searching on it. All of those sort of things are removed on purpose when building the URL. It's only searching (at RPC's end) for the text I pass in the URL. If I put DVD_RW in the querystring (as it's known), their bit of text in the firmware page would also need to contain that exact same text. Going by experience, it never does. They just about manage to put the manufacturer and the model - sometimes not even the full model. As the drive info can't have spaces, thats why the '+' symbols are there.

Ignore the POF's, they're bogus! Scan it again and they'll be gone. My BenQ does that too sometimes - or perhaps it's DVDInfoPro... who knows! That'll bring the quality rating right up. If your scans don't match up with (or better) those ones in the 'drives and media' forum, maybe you just got a slightly worse batch of discs. You can't really compare scans from different drives... that's why I've done all mine with the 1640 and not moved up to the 1655. Even 2 of the same model can give different results. So long as you can scan discs burnt with your drives and compare the two, that's all that matters Oh and btw, the scans are all green.... that's good Orange is worrying... Red is bad.

If you have another disc to spare, use discovery mode. As it doesn't burn a file, it will take one potential problem out of the equation. The Buffers should be full 100% of the time. The only time the Device one drops off is when the WOPC stuff does it's little check. That should only last a second or two. You've got about 400mb worth of slow burning in that graph, so you should be able to see if the buffers are going mad at any point.

Can't remember exactly what's sent. I think it's just the drive model and not the make/firmware parts. Click the update firmware button and look in IE's address bar and you can see for yourself

It's only DVD+RW that needs to be formatted. That's the only one that would take a long period of time to prepare before the write actually starts. All other pre-write erasing is done via the 'Quick' method. Oh and as lfc said, buy 4x rewritables! For the sake of 60pence or whatever, is there any point in NOT getting some if you do actually use them?!

lol it's EASY now! Just run the file, ensure the correct drive is selected (easy if you only have 1 in the first place!) and then click 'start'. That is of course assuming you downloaded the file from the www.liteonit.com site.

If it says overwrite, the disc is already formatted and it'll burn DVD+RW instantly. Overwrite ONLY applies to DVD+RW. If it says it's not formatted, you just need to do that once. Do it and then forget about it. Also, a 4x disc would take 15 mins (approx) to format - I'm not sure where you're getting 40 from.

I/O = Input Output - i.e. disc (hdd / cd / dvd) activity. WOPC = Walking Optimal Power Calibration. This is where the drive constantly (frequently) checks the quality of the burn as it goes. If it finds the burn going a bit downhill, it'll slow it down and/or change the power of the laser to compensate.

Erm... it got to 8x and then died. Lots of weird ups and down until the 2gb marker, then it continued at 6x before messing up again. Update to the YS0X firmware and try again. You can see my scan of the same media type with that drive in the 'Drives and Media' forum. Oh and it being on USB might be a factor - seeing as how CPU intensive USB is compared to methods of connectivity. It's either CPU or other I/O that's killing the speed, or it's the disc quality and WOPC. It shouldn't be the disc though because MCC are normally pretty damn good! Let's hope the firmware update fixes the issue
