The only way to find out the optimal speed for burning certain discs in a certain drive is to burn a disc or two at each speed and then scan them in a drive that supports scanning (LiteOn drives do) and see which ones have the lowest number of errors. That said, if you don't fancy messing with all that, just stick to the speeds you mentioned.

Overburning is simply a case of letting the drive decide where the end of the disc is and not (artificially) limiting the amount the program will attempt to burn to the reported capacity of the disc. ImgBurn has never stopped you from attempting to burn beyond the reported capacity of the disc, it just warns you about it when you try.

Either it works or it doesn't. It's not going to damage your drive. Try and burn more to a disc than its reported capacity and the drive will either error out straight away or it'll continue until it really can't burn any more. My advice? Don't even bother with it. Just burn what actually fits.

Turn your machine physically off and then on again. Rebooting isn't enough to fix this.

AWS is a feature YOU have to configure (check the Guides). If you don't, the program just tells the drive to burn at the maximum speed it supports for that media. Hence the reason it says '(MAX)' next to where AWS is selected in the 'Write Speed' drop down box. If your drive supports burning at 10x on 4x media then that's down to the drive's manufacturer. All that stuff is controlled by the firmware and no program can make the drive do something it doesn't want to do.

You know as much as I do It could be due to dust/dirt/finger prints around the edge of the disc or due to an actual fault with it.

The drive reported a 'Write Error' so I guess it had a problem writing to the disc.

Load the previous session's log when you open ImgBurn again? That'll just confuse things - so the answer is 'No'.

This is beyond the scope of ImgBurn.

You'd have to burn the VIDEO_TS folder/files directly to the DVD+R DL disc, you wouldn't be able to make an image first as it would know the files fit on a single layer disc and just build a single layer image. *ok, that isn't 100% true, you could adjust the single layer media size right down so it exceeds that and then builds an image for a DL disc. Just don't forget to revert the single layer media size when you're done.
