Latest Nero has this toolbar also. Decided to install it just to see how Nero handles it and it was as easy to remove through Windows remove programs, once it was installed as when I installed it with ImgBurn on a Vista computer.
Here is a nice program to keep your Windows settings saved in the future.

Have you tried to burn a DL disc and see if the burner changes it to DVD-ROM by default? In many cases the burner do this by itself.
Yes, book type/bitsetting is to change the book type from +R DL to DVD-ROM (same as for pressed discs).
Found an old Mac program that I'm not sure how it works.

Tried to find anything on the net but no luck for that drive regarding book type. Seems to be mostly used in Mac computers.
Not sure why you want to change +R DL media to -R DL media. Sure you are not meaning to DVD-ROM?
The log could give some clues even if you don't see the error in the log.
A screen shot could also be good.
Either your burner is not a burner or it doesn't like the media brand you are using.
If you don't like installing SP3, you could install this update to get better support for the locking issue.

If not, there is an entry in the FAQ about how to find out what program that is locking the drive.
I've seen some posts in the past and there has been suggested to try the Incremental write type. (Settings, the tab Write).
Never seen anyone post back the results so I have no idea if it works. I think CloneDVD uses that write type as default.
There is a GD30 version of your firmware. It might help but I doubt it. It's a rather old burner and it seems it have problems with DL media.

ASPI is for older Windows systems like Windows 9x/Me. If you are using XP and newer you should use SPTI.
ASPI is the "program" that runs the connection with your optiacl discs and the computer/burning program.
So if you donĀ“t use Windows 9x/Me, you can camly ignore ASPI.
This program should show you the version number and if ASPI is installed.

The first logs issue is that the burn was so bad that the burner can't read the disc and second logs issue is that the burner lost connection with your computer.
Your other burner also fails to burn those discs?
